Deciding on dog breed

It's too damn hard, seriously. I opened a Husky thread a while back cause it's the dog I've wanted pretty much my entire life. Akita's are amazing too.

I've been reading up on Husky's though and the amount of hair they lose, how they refuse to listen to their boss a lot of times, are kind of a turn off. The hair not so much to me, that's an issue my gf has. But refusing to listen is something I don't like when it comes to safety for other people/dogs, etc.

Do all dogs stink, by the way? I know some stink worse than others but but father in law has 2 dogs (no idea what breed) that get washed and trimmed a LOT but they still stink horribly.

Can some of you throw around some tips? What breeds are really cool to get? I really don't like the standard dogs like golden retrievers, labs, etc. I'm sure they are fantastic dogs, but I don't want to own one.

Cheers!

Phoenix 09-03-2011 01:07 PM

if you have a tiny cock...you need a pitbull

haha just fuckin around...seriously, my buddy had a husky before, great dog.
it worked well as we would go there everyday after classes and go out with the dog and throw the ball for it....they need a lot of exercise.

What if I have a huge cock with a sweet throbbing vane?

See, a lot of people say you can't have your husky unleashed cause chances are it will run off on it's own as soon as he's distracted and his instinct takes over. Ofcourse there's exceptions but as a general rule that's what they say. That kinda sucks too..

Rhodesian Ridgeback. Lot of personality. Energetic for the first couple of years but mellow out after that. They become low key but will play and expend a lot of energy if you want them too. They are versatile and are fine in any climate. The ridge on their back is very unique and very cool. They make good watch dogs and despite the trait of them being standoffish around people, they are very friendly but will protect you fiercely if need be. Give them a look.

Good luck on your choice of breed. I know it can be a pain with so many to choose from.

I like mutts. Check the dog-pound, sometimes death row doggies are the best pets.

Thanks man, looks awesome for sure. I have 0 knowledge about breeds so a lot of the choosing is very exiting.

I'm 23 and I'm planning to do long term world traveling in a few years. It would be great if I could take the dog with me. So I guess a dog that's good with a lot of change is also mandatory.

Dude, YES. I came across two in a zoo a few weeks back. They were amazing, seriously. But I do like a badass looking dog, dont ask me why, guess I'm shallow like that ;) That's why I love huskys too.

Here's the chow chows I saw at the zoo:

I'm a Golden Retriever man myself, but I'm fond of all big dogs. Whatever breed you choose, there is usually a local rescue organization specializing in it. Check them out first. Allot of people have had to give up their pets due to hard times lately.

Will definitely check out shelters :thumbsup

What about the smell question? Do all dogs stink or does that have to do with the length of their coat or something?

If you can find one of these then this is a great dog to get

If not pit bull ;)

I have three small, short-haired dogs and one large-ish long haired dog. None of them really stink unless they find something interesting to roll in.

But I'm used to the smell of dogs.

L-Pink 09-03-2011 01:37 PM

I didn't know you could take dogs to the zoo?

barcodes 09-03-2011 01:37 PM

I have 2 lab mixes I got from the humane society a year and a half ago, great dogs. The girl is a lab and border collie mix, very very sweet with people/kids/cats/dogs. She figured out how to use the bathroom outside very fast when shes laying around you can move em,hug em, play with them, etc. They are sweet, playful, and loyal dogs. Big though, my girl is around 85 lbs. The guy is good as well but not as nice, more cautious. He is beagle and lab mix. Still a good dog but not as trusting with everything.

Good luck to you with whatever you end up choosing.

You notice other peoples dogs smell and get used to your own one so don't notice as much. Also some dogs seem to love swimming in nasty water where others won't go in water at all.

Short fur is less messy BUT the dog will get cold and miserable in the winter.

Over here you can ;)

Having said that, I live in Holland. In 23 years of my life I've never heard of anyone who keeps their dog outside in the yard over here. I believe that in general a lot of dogs live outside in the garden in the US, which is great, but over here they spend their time indoors since it rains 95% of the time in this god damned shit hole.

Man, I even forgot about mixed breeds, the list just got 15 times longer.

Too many variables to suggest a breed. If you're married with kids, boarder collie because they are amazingly smart and get along with other dogs and people. If you're a single guy and want a pal that's smart and fun, get a Jack Russell.

Jack Russels are great - but I dont think that they are for this guy.

Red Setters are amazing as well....

Rhodesian Ridgeback really looks awesome. Already found some places to get them.

1250,00 EUR -- not bad :winkwink:

I see you are interested in the ridgeback, here is a vid from a good show on animal planet. This episode explains a little about the breed.

A typical day consists of chewing something he's been told 100x not to or barking for zero reason. It's hard to explain, but he's just off with the pace of life. Like one time I was playing with my little terrier on the ground and his big dumb ass got so excited he ran around the couch and clocked me in the jaw dislocating it.

I was home alone and freaked out because my jaw would not go back in place. So I get my keys to rush to the hospital, he thinks it's park time, jumps up hitting my hand flipping my keys right into his water bowl.

The keys won't turn the truck alarm off because they're wet, so I had to sit and wait for my wife to drive an hour away to take me to the hospital as he's jumping up and down thinking it's park time.

Shit like this happens so much in my house we call it getting Homer-ed

Wow, really sounds perfect to me. Honestly.. The more I look at them the cooler I think they are. Plus the fact they are ODORLESS is a jackpot ;)

Remember I said I want a dog that's just badass? Well, a dog to chase down lions pretty much lives up to that :thumbsup

thickcash_amo 09-03-2011 02:03 PM

In my opinion, the smaller the dog, the less the smell. I have a jack russel/whippet mix....she is batshit crazy and totally worth it!

Golden Retriever

One of the best decisions I ever made for my family.

The temperament is friendly, doesn't bark and sleeps all the time.

My retriever gets my TV remote, my slippers and picks up various other objects on the floor without damaging them. My retriever also retrieves beer from my wife when she is downstairs.

Retrievers just want to please all the time.

grumpy 09-03-2011 02:46 PM

they smell after what you feed them. Good food, no smell.

papill0n 09-03-2011 02:57 PM

you say you want a dog and then you say your going to travel the world

you either plan on never staying indoors anywhere or the idea is selfish and short sighted

edit and like grumpy says how the dog smells is directly related to what you feed them

I said I'm planning on long term world travel and said that having a dog that could come with would be the perfect option. Kind of asking at the same time if there's a breed capable of doing so.

Not a selfish guy and love all animals, would never make a stupid decision like getting a dog and then give it up a year later.

Forget about buying a dog.

Traveling by car to N. Italy was about the limit.

Go on your world travels first and buy a dog when you return. The obvious setbacks are too numerous. Food, restaurants, shopping, access to places, climate, travel, laws, having to always have the dog with you, hotel accommodation, local people. Italy they loved Rajah. I know in some countries in the Far East they would rather shoot a dog than pat it. You might want to take a boat trip and can't because they don't allow dogs on the boat or a flight in a small plane. Then rabbis is a problem in some countries.

Rabbies

Quote:

Rabies occurs in more than 150 countries and territories.
Worldwide, more than 55 000 people die of rabies every year.

bronco67 09-04-2011 08:19 AM

Look, I'm just to tell you that Labrador Retrievers are the best breed. That is all.
