Too much car for an 18 year old?
My son turns 18 in October and yesterday I bought him a V6 Mustang Convertible.
Now I'm having second thoughts. Too much? He doesn't know I've bought it and has no idea he's getting wheels. Here's a cell phone pic I took of the car. http://bladewire.com/pics/ConvertibleMustang952011.jpg |
Nice car. Not a bad choice really.
My cousin just turned 16 and my Grandma bought him a damn 2011 dodge challenger. I drove it and all I can say is he is going to freaking kill himself!!
Too much? Depends what his friends have got.
He's going to be pissed you got him the V6 model, poor choice dad.
I had a V-8 when I was 16. If he gets pissed about the 6 vs an 8 it means you have spoiled him and should take it back.
Willing to bet it is Europeans that say it is too much. |

WOO HOO! |
It's a good looking car which is all a kid that age cares about. Stock Mustangs (even V8's) are wimps as far as horse power is concerned so you don't have to worry about him street racing.
My dad told me for your first car get something that it doesnt really matter if it takes a few hits as they are going to happen.
Does he know you juggle nuts?

i had two clean ass novas '76 and a '78 at 18 rims and limo tent and a ghetto blaster hahaha!!
It's about as fast as your average minivan, so I wouldn't be worried about the power.
That's exactly what I'm looking to buy my kid, although I've got a few more years of waiting.
It depends on the kid really. Most kids will tear up their first new car. I physically ran two cars into the ground, and totaled two others before I was 18. Yet my best friend in high school had a beautiful Firebird, treated it like a baby, and never had a problem - or a traffic ticket. If your kid is responsible, then great. If not, buy him (her) a beater until they figure it out. |
V6, just right. Slap a roll bar in.

Lots of great input in this thread so far thanks I look forward to reading more tomorrow :thumbsup |
I learned to drive on a car exactly like this one:
http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/wayfarer.html Same color even. Had only 19K miles, a radio, a heater, a defroster, a heater under the back seat and Fluid Drive, which meant that it shifted like a regular three on the tree but you could pull up to a stoplight and not depress the clutch, then take off by just pushing down on the gas. http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/wayfarer.html Another view but different color: http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/h...w/DSC09269.jpg HUGE back seat.............................................. ........ |
kids now a days need to be 18 to get a drivers license? used to be 16 when I was growing up...
You should have bought him a real old camaro.
With enough luck it would have turned into a transformer and you would have became rich... |

I got my m/c permit in Hawaii when I was 15.
You gonna buy him another one when he crashes this one?
I dont know your son so i cant give you an honest opinion, but i wouldn't think you'd buy him a car that he may get in trouble with if you didn't think he could handle the responsibility.
Congrats on being able to reward your son so generously. |
my first car was a yellow 81 dodge reliant. it got totaled along with 2 other cars i've owned.
have fun getting it fixed, 18 years olds drive like assholes, esp when they have cares like that. |
It's a V6 and at that weight, i wouldn't at all say that's too much. I have driven one of those, it's hardly that much power that it makes you want to drive it crazy. If he's going to drive like an idiot in that car, he'd drive like an idiot in any car.
Honestly? It's a good choice if he's a responsible lad. Decent on fuel and lots of horsepower. It still has more than any stock v8 ford has produced for the mustang in previous generations.
Real nice car.
You must of thought it was perfect for him when you seen it or you wouldn't of got it. Good choice in my opinion.... |

I had a '78 Trans-Am with a 6.6L V8 when I was 16. I never got killed in it.
depends on what hes like behind the wheel when im with my mum i drive like a nun when im by myself im a little bit reckless
I'd have went with an SUV. Safer in an accident (because it's heavier), handles like shit so he wont be tempted to go fast, and generally slower.
A great car to learn on and then he can buy his own after he learns the basics
nice car... V6 is good choice i think for him, had lots of friends in high school with V8 mustangs... the majority of them wound up totalled by the end of senior year.... but then again we were all rednecks who loved to race :)
I don;t know about convertible part. Other than that looks like a good car.
It is not too much.
Sweet ride! I'm sure he'll love it.
I don't get why parents give their kids cars in the first place so I am probably the last person that should say anything... but I have to pass this on... I grew up around some very privileged absolutely affluent people and old money wisdom was you never did stuff like buy your kids cars. (Must just be a WASPY Connecticut thing or something... I don't know...)
Good luck with it. |
Depends on the type of person your son is. I'd honestly say yes, not only did you buy him a sports car, but you bought him a sports car with less safety than the hard top. Regardless of the fact that it's a v6, it's still a remotely fast car and chances are he will wreck it. On the flip side of the coin, It'd definitely increase his chances of getting laid and increase his popularity at school. Always good to be the cool Dad. I'd go with what baddog said, if he bitches about not having the v8 he definitely isn't ready for the car.

Definitely don't give him an S.U.V |
