I was really stoked when I saw some of those new emo cherubines on MTV - their hair and make up stylist must be spending more time on them than on Britney Spears.

Plus I also saw one of those bands live, the guy was putting on some really bad microphone torturing, a natural reaction would be to choke him so he can't ever repeat that.

xNetworx 02-07-2012 11:20 AM

metal is dead as dead. i miss the good old days

sixsax 02-07-2012 11:22 AM

Hate '80s movies but love '80s & '90s metal.

candyflip 02-07-2012 11:25 AM

I would say that this is a result of MTV, but even MTV has little influence on what goes on in Music these days.

Metal stopped being metal as we knew it when punk and grunge broke in the early 90s.

Shotsie 02-07-2012 12:07 PM

Dude, "emo" has been around since the early 90's. The first time "emo" was used it was a shorter way to say "emotive-hardcore," that is hardcore that deals with deeper things than just mostly politics and violence, introspective hardcore, so-to-say. It didn't even evolve from metal. Bands like Jawbreaker, Dinasaur Jr., Fugazi and Mohinder are "emo"

Emo is not dressing strange and wearing make up.

And I gotta say that if you think metal is shit nowadays, well, you're just being one of those oldheads, you know the type "back in my day blah blah blah" don't be that guy. There were waaay more shit bands back in the 80's considered "metal", think every fucking hairband around. And for that matter, if music didn't change, a band like Pantera would have stayed a glam metal band like when they first started out. If you're a musician you gotta understand that music changes.
Mastodon

That's metal nowadays.
Killswitch engage

So what you don't like a band like Avenged Sevenfold? They're still talented

MarkDeus 02-07-2012 12:14 PM

There's a lot of great bands nowadays. You just have to swim deeper into the lake of shit, where there is still some fresh water at the bottom.

My favorite bands right now:
Animal As leaders - I have to break down a song for a student and I've been brainfarting all night long. Plays non-stop in my playlist

Wintersun - 2004 black/death symphonic stuff. One of the only metal albums I consider completely "flawless"

Other than that, I must say I don,t follow what has been out for the last 3-4 years. I stick with my 90's debut 2000 stuff

Peaked in the 80's. Why do you think all 4 of "the Big 4" had their biggest albums in '86.

Because people didn't know any better?

epitome 02-07-2012 04:09 PM

Metal was never good to begin with.

I love Killswitch Engage and All That Remains. Does Fear Factory count as old or new metal?

It's really good for 14 year olds to annoy their parents by playing it loudly. Most people then realise it's shit.

:)

not impressed at all with bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Killswitch Engage, but there are still some great metal bands doing stuff nowadays

Nile is fucking amazing, even Lamb of God is great if you want to see a good band that is making it big commercially

Probably why I cannot stand it. My brother is 12 years older than me and his bedroom was right next to mind. That shit was blaring non-stop all day in the 80's. Drove me bonkers.

rowan 02-07-2012 06:02 PM

I was channel surfing the other day and was passing through a metalheads show regularly... most of it sounded like linkin park, you know, guys jumping around like they're hardcore, but really the guitar distortion sounds quite soft and muted, and the drum is just a bass one beat, snare the other.

bronco67 02-07-2012 06:15 PM

Purely subjective, of course.

This is my favorite metal song in years.

This song is just some some old timey ass kicking rock n roll.

A bunch of people mentioned Mastodon in this thread. I think they are great. Here is even a video with Brent from Mastodon, Dave from Inronaunt and Myself talking about how bad the disturbed suck...

Actually I have 2 of them from months apart...

Well, it sounds like you know what sucks. How come you don't like today's metal, besides the obvious crappy ones you mentioned?

Your only argument as to why Disturbed suck is that they are Jews and David doesn't have a tattoo? Fuck man, you are lucky you made that shitty links list back in the golden era because you sound like a dipshit when you speak. :2 cents:

My brother is a metal purist and loves Nile, however if I even mention LoG, he flips, LOL.

When I was younger I used to say "oh only this kind of music is good" and that was all I listened to. As I got older I realized there is a lot of really good music out there if you look beyond your usual boundaries. It may not be your usual style, but it's out there if you look.

My criteria of music is: if it makes me feel good, I like it. I don't care what the genre is. Tomorrow I'll wake to Pantera, right now I'm listening to Zero 7, an hour ago it was Kanye.

2MuchMark 02-07-2012 08:15 PM

If you hate today's metal you're listening to the wrong metal!

Go to iTunes and sample a few songs from Disturbed. You will like it.

Yeh... I don't think so. That was a terrible, terrible, terrible example. I didn't mind Disturbed 12 years ago but now they make my head hurt.

Waiter 02-07-2012 08:29 PM

the old good days are gone ... :( HM forever :thumbsup

SomeCreep 02-08-2012 12:17 AM

I still shed a tear everytime I see what happened to Metallica.

Adam X 02-08-2012 02:32 AM

After the new wave of british metal hit (maiden, priest) and bands like metallica, exodus and testament were tearin shit up in the bay area (where I was in a band with paul baloff)..home of thrash metal... there was a 2nd wave of bands with immediate influences.. here's an arizona band that you metalheads will know.. the remix, sounds better..

They make awesome music videos though ><

Asylum (the song itself) wasn't so bad. The rest of the album was pretty meh.

Indestructible (the song) and Inside the Fire were pretty good from the Indestructible album. Rest was so so.

10k fists was ok

Believe was pretty good

Sickness was probably their best album, ironically enough, the first album is usually an artist/bands best album.

The problem with bands like disturbed is once they become mainstream, they no longer write their music how they want.. they're generally stuck having to get approval from the producer.

Which is ironic because the garbage that producers pass off as music these days is absolutely horrendous.
