I find Baby on Board signs quite annoying.

I find these signs to be completely self-centered and egotistical, and mostly just downright pretentious. "Baby on board"? Yeah? I should bust out my Human on Board sign.

Fuck... you think your baby is more important than everyone else? Should your babies life be valued over and above all other life on the road?

Imagine this... I swerve to avoid someone coming into my lane without checking their blind spot. I check the left of me, before I head into that lane in an emergency fashion... but before doing so, I read the "Baby on Board" sign in the window of the car next to me and think "fuck, I can't crash into that guy... he's got a baby on board!" so I slam on my brakes and wait patiently until I find a vehicle that does not have a baby on board... to safely crash into someone else.

This also seems strange; Are mothers supposed to be safer drivers? You've got a screaming, shitting, pissing, puking baby in the passenger seat. You're hormonal, you've got breast milk squirting out of your tits, and your bra is soaking wet... not to mention you're probably bleeding from your vag and who knows what kind of maniacal bipolar mood you're in while you're behind the wheel... BUT... you want EVERYONE around you to know you've got 'precious cargo' on board so you can drive like a fucking asshole like you're the only one on the road. You know the people I'm talking about... turning right from the left hand lane, ignoring the fact that you almost caused a 30 car pile up, and while she's cutting you off you honk at her for nearly killing you, she's flipping you off. It is not uncommon to see mothers on the road driving literally like they just got their licenses yesterday, with their 6 unbuckled children bouncing around in the back seat of her Suburban... paying more attention to them than the road itself.

Fuck... if you want to put a productive sign on your car, it should read "Inattentive MOTHER on Board!"

I find it along the same lines of stupid as these idiots prancing around with their "God Bless America" flags and "God Bless Other Religious Assholes of Similar Faith". Just self-centered assholes that can't see beyond their noses.

I definitely make sure I don't crash into anyone with a Baby on Board sign. You know, because accidents happen on purpose...

All what you say is very true. And in fact the life of a baby is worth much less than another life because one can make a new one quick and the investments made so far, money and time wise, are low compared to an older human.

Precisely. :2 cents:

Older human, PHD... educated at Harvard... 20 years of professional experience, $600,000 / year income, employees that depend on you... patients that depend on you... colleagues that depend on you. Scientific contributions to society that are invaluable, and can enhance the lives of millions. Their lives are INFINITELY more valuable than that of a 1 week old person. Yet, do we see that doctor rolling around in his Porsche with a "Doctor on Board" sign? No... because he's not a pretentious asshole. But holy shit... there's a million and one mothers that want EVERYONE to know they have a child on board. Let's stop traffic... there's a mother coming through!

It's analogous to saying "VIP"... with mothers posting a sign that says "VIP coming through!"

Pseudonymous 06-24-2012 03:36 AM

Actually it was started to let paramedics know theres a baby to look for incase of a bad accident

Also I think some use it simply to spark the thought about safe driving, not implying anything else (like who is more important).

This topic reminds me of that George Carlin skit about baby on board signs. Hilarious. Here's the clip:

In the end, the goal is about safe driving and saving people.

I've read the history of the sign, and that it's original intention was to let paramedics know if there might be a baby wedged underneath a seat of a burning car... or thrown out the window of a car that went off a cliff... or something along those lines. But I really think the original intent has been completely lost with the people using the signs these days. Whenever I'm on the road I see parents driving without ANY babies, and that square sign is hanging from the rear window... and sometimes I get a big kick out of a BIG MOTHER FUCKING Baby On Board sign that spans the entire width of the rear window.

I see cars parked on the street all the time with the sign hanging in the window. So it's apparent that parents don't really understand the purpose for it... and it's blatantly apparent they're using it for purely superficial purposes... to make it seem as if the lives of their offspring are above everyone else on the road.

Anyway, if anyone needs to be a safer driver... it's the dumb fucks that are driving half the speed limit and swerving all over the road, changing lanes without signaling and coming close to side-swiping other cars... basically driving like drunks and drug addicts. It seems like most are using the sign to compensate for their own inability to drive in a skilled fashion... I think a large percentage of these people need to have their licenses revoked.

I need to put up my GoPro and do a "Baby on Board: Irresponsible Mothers Edition" compilation.

Hell... simply getting in a car is a dangerous proposition. If these parents find driving to be such a risk that they feel the need to modify the behaviors of people around them, perhaps they just shouldn't bring their kids out on the road with them. Or perhaps they should just learn how to follow rules and common courtesies for themselves...

Saw that a minute ago when I was looking at some YT commentary... Fuck these mothers seem to be pushing the limits of ignorance these days. "I'm a mother and I'm offended. These signs are very important." Like me saying a sign that says "How's my driving? 1-800-EAT-SHIT" is an important sign...

Are those signs back in style? Remember them decorating minivans in the mid 80's

I agree. I am a father myself but noticed way before I had kids that new mothers walked like they owned the world, like they should get treated better than others because they had a baby which pissed me off too. It's almost like they are 'using' the baby as a status symbol instead of just being happy with it and going about their day.

I also used to see them walk across streets, (nose in the air) pushing a stroller and not looking to see first if the coast was clear, meaning if a car did run a red light then the baby would get hit first. Dumb.

Seriously? You're that bothered by it?

Someone has anger and self entitlement issues when it comes to families other than your own.

I do expect others to be more careful around my carload of children and would hurt someone seriously over it if they cut in front of me because of a failed safe passing if I had an infant in the car. Sudden braking, swerving etc can harm their necks. Have some humbleness, would ya? It's just parents making sure others know to make theur traffic maneuvers with extra care to the fact any sudden movement can actually hurt a newborn and at best (most common reasons we use these signs) is to understand stupidy from other drivers can wake up our screaming fit of terror that took 3 hours of driving to get her to stop throwing up and screaming cause she wants "out".

If asking for a bit of respect and extra care from other drivers is selfish to some, then I am really sorry that something so trivial and obvious is such an angering facet of modern society to you "baby-haters". Your being late for a latee is no more important nor less important than someone's kids in a car your about to pass at 160 with oncoming traffic then I guess.

After beating the fuck out of a guy for doing that to us when my son was an infant, I decided it's better to NOT use baby on board signs because I did notice that people do drive crazier around them because non-breeders feel so entitled to make it known that "Your brats are not my concern so why should I change MY ways because you decided top shit out kids".

(*disclaimer: I am not attacking YOU directly, just the mentality of it that many share so when I say "you" above it means in general)

Smart babies - stupid adults

A store I used to work in, mothers would bring their babies and brag about their APGAR scores, how they were always 9.999. Or some other test they do to toddlers. They always score Perfect. So how come when they grow up, they end up being stupid cows?
And for the most part it seems rich makes you dumber or at least your children. The next county over is Johnson County, of of the richest in the US.
We have jokes such as, "how many JOCO girls does it take to fix a flat tire? 4. One to call Daddy and 3 to bitch about it."

they can be pretty annoying

pimpmaster9000 06-24-2012 01:10 PM

and what the fuck is up with this "let women and children out first" in case of an accident in an boat/airplane??? while the women check their mascara, grab their handbags, pick up their screaming children, check their hair ect everybody on board is going to burn! fuck that...the men should get to go out first simply because they are stronger and quicker and will clear out quicker and have more chances of survival in general...fact is women/children evacuate slower and it makes no sense to favor the weak in a crisis...

In retrospect driving that car to a convention was never one of my best ideas.

Sold the car a couple years ago to a friend who uses it to commute from Sac to the Bay Area. Still gets 40+ mpg... still runs perfectly with 350+k miles on it...

And what would my "issues" be, Doctor Lloyd? :) Let's get your professional GFY diagnosis.

You can't possibly disagree that the sign isn't used for pretentious statements. Even on the mommy forums women talk about wanting the signs to rub parenthood in the faces of women who don't have children. It has nothing to do with safety.

It's similar to bumper stickers that say "My other ride is a Ferrari". Drive safely around me! I have a Ferrari! :)

Says someone who comes from the land of hyper-conservatism. Penalties of jail with 6 months loss of license for driving 45kph over the speed limit... at any speed.

Anyone going faster than that is defined as a big hooner in the eyes of GeorgeyW. :)

I LOL'd.

Only because the wife just put two of those bright yellow signs on her souped-up Integra (racing kit/exhaust, wing, dropped low as well) a few months ago.

The thing can do a 1/4 mile in about 16 secs and yet she expects other people to "respect" the Baby on Board logos. Mind you, she can handle herself pretty well, but has a lead foot for sure.

And she also swears that she will NEVER drive a minivan or station wagon.

I've done some street racing in it, so the car has a rep in these parts. She's probably tired of persons pulling up next to her wanting to race, thinking that I'm driving. Hey, as long as she doesn't put those signs on our other cars, I'm not complaining.

I was looking for a similarly designed gag sign to replace them with, just to see how long it takes her to notice. Can't wait!
