Need advice on Tumblr

I set up a Tumblr blog and could use advice on how not to get banned and advice in general from those savvy on it. Main goal is to drive traffic to my WP blog so I won't be hitting them with a lot of plugrush pops. Any help is sure to be appreciated. Will be happy to reblog in return if you wish.

trial & error is your best bet. esp since tumblr just changed ownership, things that worked recently may not work much longer so other peoples methods could already be obsolete. GL.

Had a question on this subject, today I noticed certain tags cannot be accessed i.e.:

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/big%20boobs

If I'm not mistaken, these keywords and phrases worked fine prior to Yahoo taking ownership.

Has anyone else noticed this? Has anyone read anything in regards to the future of adult content on Tumblr also?

I had no problem accessing "big boobs" or "anal sex" or "midget porn" just now. Might have been a temporary glitch.

For the OP - I've placed a discreet link to my paysite both in the photo captions and the "content source" field with no issues from Tumblr mgmt. I think their red flag is affiliate links, but if you're just sending traffic to a straight-up WP domain I doubt there'll be a problem.

At least for now. Will be interesting to see what Yahoo changes things, I'm sure not for the better...

Fat Panda 05-30-2013 01:36 PM

that tag and all porn tags work fine here...are you using a ghost account?

The first comprehensive guide of its type. A really good discussion with updates and all:

So it works for others...wow. I still can't access those tags and I am not even signed in to Tumblr. But non-adult tags work just fine. Go figure... but good to know that it is just happening on my end, that's really all I care about since my only concern was the possibility of Yahoo targeting Tumblr porn.

Ahhh so its you guys taking all of the keyword rich subdomains, huh!?? :321GFY

Affiliate links should generally be avoided on Tumblr, but I have had no problems linking images on tumblr to my own family of sites. (I.e. picture of girl links to corresponding tube clip on my site)

That is pretty much the only way to fly under the tumblr radar. :thumbsup

Is safe-search unchecked in your account?

Use ifttt.com and make a "recipe" where everytime a blog post is posted on your site it is auto-posted to tumblr. It's all on auto-pilot and iftt.com is in good standing with tumblr. I use this and nextscripts autoposter to tumblr and nothing has been banned (20+ accounts).

You can get your own link shortener or even use tons of the ones out there to cloak the aff link. Tumblr doesn't want to scan a million bit.ly links for affiliates. It is best to just link to an offsite page in your wordpress blog and tube however... for SE purposes

thmvp20 05-30-2013 04:41 PM

As it turns out, it doesn't really matter that I had trouble accessing Tumblr tagged URLs with porn related keywords because of this:

http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackha...y-nghmgh-k.png

And here I was also wondering why my last 2 xxx tumblr blogs created ~1 week ago would not show up in Google at all. Unfortunately that makes sense to me now.

Old Tumblr pages seem to be ok, so far at least......but new blogs aren't ranking.

What a damn shame this is :(

Harmon 05-30-2013 04:48 PM

I have several Tumblr blogs with affiliate links, not one ever to get banned or blocked. WTF are you doing wrong?

Tumblr has no way to manage all of them. Some slip through the cracks. Not only that, it's now under Yahoo. So no one really knows what they're up to.

If you send the traffic to your blog I think is OK, but tumblr don't allow affilliates in their service is better not fill the blog with any aff links or too much ads and send all the traffic to your blog.

That's why you couldn't access them. I signed in and they worked.

On the new T&C's regarding "adult" and "nsfw"...I wonder if they'll start charging adult bloggers to use the service, and get sites ranked in Google? Perhaps even mainstream affiliates too.

They'll know that affiliates have flocked to Tumblr because they're having such a hard time getting self-hosted blogs to rank in Google, in the wake of Panda and Penguin. Maybe this could be a monetization strategy for Tumblr, without being reliant on advertising. I don't mean Yahoo "profiting from porn", I mean creating a "premium" business version of the service.

looky_lou 05-30-2013 09:06 PM

If you check Adult in your settings, Tumblr inserts noindex into your Tumblr blog. NSFW is still index-able by google and others, but nor Adult setting.

So, you are better off to mark them NSFW and go softcore on your images if possible.

Great, use tumblr to update your blogs through RSS. Then you hit traffic on 2 levels...you will get traffic on 2 levels. :thumbsup

I do it, it's super easy.

It goes here: crakrevenue.com/blog/yahoo-acquires-tumblr/

If you ever see a bit.ly link and you want to see where it goes, simply add a + to the end of the bitly url.

Like this:
bit.ly/114x473+

It shows you where it leads and the statistics.

Well that's not my blog. If it was i'd do things a bit differently.

I would use this plugin to automatically update my facebook, twitter, and all of my social accounts.

wordpress.org/plugins/social-networks-auto-poster-facebook-twitter-g/

That way i'd get a lot more traffic.

Buy a domain related to your wordpress blog. Sign up with hosted tube and set up a tube with the same niche with a link back to your blog. Use pimproll's free content and get images that correspond with your tube scenes. Upload the and image and set up click through link to the tube scene.

Did not know that, will surely remember it now.

ZombieMovies 05-31-2013 05:12 PM

Been working on Tumblr for a handful of years now.

Something super important is tags. When you search tumblr.com/tagged/InsertTagHere that only indexes your FIVE tags on a post. If you tag more than five things it will not be indexed, thus not searchable, thus never seen. You can tag more than five tags, sure, but be aware that your sixth and upward tags will not be indexed and serve no purpose to bringing in traffic.

I keep it simple generally. Tag the name of the website, do not use punctuation in your tags (you can but it's pointless). Beware that tags like "sexy", "models", "porn", get flooded out so fast that it's almost not worth it to even bother with that because people probably won't even see your posts in that tag. Get creative and clever.

I used to have an affiliate tumblr with massive success but Tumblr did eventually shut it down, as their T&S state that you cannot use tumblr for making money. Obviously they cannot crack down on everyone so if it happens to you just start over again.

Best thing to do is to buy aged tumblr accounts.

Does anyone think there will be more or less deleted Tumblrs now that Yahoo bought it?

I don't think it will change unless Yahoo starts changing things.

Like Zombiemovies said. If it brings traffic, people are gonna keep trying, Even if they get booted.

RIght now, Yahoo is scrambling to become relevant. If they change tumblr too much = they are fucked.

Marissa Mayer and her team are not going to fuck with Tumblr at all, according to what they stated thus far. Reports are that they will monetize the majority of the blogs with advertisements, but will not touch the NSFW side since advertisers don't want their ads showing up next to porn or controversial content.

Just label your blog as NSFW: Adult and you will be okay.
