NEW YORK (AP) — The woman who resigned as head of a local NAACP branch after her parents said she was white said Tuesday that she started identifying as black around the age of 5, when she drew self-portraits with a brown crayon, and "takes exception" to the contention that she tried to deceive people.

Rachel Dolezal said Tuesday on NBC'S "Today" Show that some of the discussion about her has been "viciously inhumane."

Dolezal carefully constructed a life as a black civil rights activist in the last decade in the inland Northwest.

She has resigned as president of the Spokane, Washington branch of the NAACP, lost her position as a part-time African studies instructor at a local university, lost her job as a freelance newspaper columnist and become the subject of a probe by the city Ethics Commission.

The furor has touched off national debate over racial identity and divided the NAACP itself.

Dolezal, a 37-year-old woman with a light brown complexion and dark curly hair, graduated from historically black Howard University and was married to a black man. For years, she publicly described herself as black and complained of being the victim of racial hatred in the heavily white region.

According to Rachel Dolezal, her older biological brother molested/abused a minor (family member?). Rachel Dolezal is supporting the victim, while the parents are supporting the brother. Important part of the legal case comes up this Summer. Parents don't like Rachel supporting the victim...thus they want to damage her credibility before she even appears in court.

They didn't. They were contacted by media as part of their investigation of her. "Is she African American?"... "No, she isn't". That all began with her claims of being racially discriminated against, profiled by police etc

I don't think they did.... This had been simmering for some time. The mother and father seem nice, raised a daughter and then adapted other kids. The parents and the daughter hadn't spoken in some time, although I believe anyone told us why.

My point is... This wasn't something that happened six weeks ago and they suddenly decided to out her. This was been going on for years.

Everything she has done or said as an "African-American" is now either tainted, or will be assumed to be nothing more than deception, including her claims of receiving hate mail and threats. Her life will be gone over with a fine tooth comb, every lie will be exposed. Every piece of dirt they can find will be served up to the media. The sad part is all of her good works will be forgotten. She will become a pariah, whether she comes clean or continues to wear her spray-on mask. She might as well start writing that inevitable book.
