Should America ban the Confederate Flag?
 

This question is being bandied about right now around various media centers. That guy you all love Bill Maher posed the question to his guest panel recently and the consensus was both for and against banning.

Many African-Americans seem to feel that it should.

White southerners defend it. White northerners (some) say it's a symbol of treason.


What say you?

I don't think it should be outright banned, but do they really need to fly it from government buildings? Keep flying it on private property and on the top of sweet ass Chargers. I think this is what they did already in California, correct?

It's not banning freedom of speech. I think most of the people that complain about it just don't want it displayed on government buildings.

Although I'm sure some don't want to see it anywhere, there's no chance of that ever happening. And that's good. You can still go into any flag shop in the US and buy Nazi flags if you want.

I'm surprised it's still being flown.

But since it is, don't take it down.

Stupid or not it's a question being asked by many in the US right now, and a lot of people are calling for the flag to be banned. Some think the guy known as the church-shooter had the goal of trying to start a race war. As Bottomtooth pointed out the flag was flying proudly at a government building down there and in light of this latest incident it is absolutely infuriating a lot of people, especially black people.

Like it or not this "stupid question" as you call it isn't going away. I heard one guy in one news spot somewhere mention about the possibility of this causing a second civil war. Extreme and unlikely, but just the fact that people are saying such things, well, is that not cause for concern? Or at least some adult discussion?

Right, the dead preacher had to drive past the confederate flag being flow on government property on his way to church they say.

It's a monster under the bed kind of issue to me. The adults will have to cater to the scared kids for a bit while they know better all the while. One day those kids will realize they were being helped onto the right side of history and might appreciate it.

all i know is nobody from new york or california should be telling people in south carolina what flag to fly. its one thing for USA to invade the south & end slavery, its another thing to be dictating to southerners what symbols they should covet. political correctness is becoming a form of social fascism in this country.

seems like state pols are shifting their positions in light of this tragedy, & that is how it should work.

The poll really gives the wrong choices. It certainly shouldn't be banned, not that there is really a way to even do that in the US. However, it should be removed from flying at public buildings, license plates, etc. That flag is basically turning into something similar to a swastika, in that it has become a powerful symbol of hate for many (especially since a lot of the displays came about in the 1960s in protest of integration).

Yeah, those states can't legally tell SC what to do; but what does that have to do with those states

Ban - No. In the US we have freedom of speech, someone can fly any type of flag they like.

The state capital of Texas has a large monument in front of the busing commemorating those who were bold enough to stand up to the tyranny of the north. Blow that ducking hate thing up. There is "government sanctioned speech" on government owned property -- a State has the right to display the Stars and Bars (confederate flag) but it's decisive. I guess the state of dumb-shits could fly the Nazi flag legally too ... Hope they have fire trucks on standby ...

Governments are just held to the "Establishment Clause" of not establishing a state religion and other 14th Amendment prohibitions.

There is 1st Amendment private speech that is protected so you can fly or burn the flag that you want.

Sure. Of course, freedom of speech comes with consequences. The flag flyer may not like those consequences (customers not going to their store, other parents not letting their children play together, protesters in front of their house), but they certainly have the right to fly it.

well, there is a freedom of speech where new yorkers & such can ridicule dumb rednecks who covet obsolete/obscene symbols. i find lots of ideas by lots of people & organizations to be dumb but i dont believe i have any right to dictate to them they should behave in line with my views a thousand miles away.

that this topic is on a web forum speaks to our new world where communication of ideas is much more free than ever before. it is fueling a social revolution of ideas where pot is getting legal & gays are getting more accepted. But sometimes people feel entitled to tell others what to do half a world away. im sure the PC police are heading to SC to protest & tell them what to do.

The constitution is there to safeguard individual rights from people who wish to take them away. Unfortunately the constitution is going down the toilet one flush at a time.

I think if individuals want to own and wave the flag, so be it. But the government should not be allowed to fly it. The flag represents slavery and oppression to a lot of people. The government shouldn't be flying that flag over the people those people.

I personally have no problems with the confederate flag as it represents history of the Deep South particularly in places like Alabama. Just like I have no issues with the KKK or the NAACP in this day and age . Seriously we have have more important enemies like those Muslim middle eastern clowns ISIS who want to kill every last one of us Americans and if they had it their way, they would nuke every one of our black and white asses. A little unity between us here as our enemies is not from within, they are all around us. When the war comes, we will fight hand in hand regardless of color as one flag will only matter, and thats our stars and stripes

The confederate flag is an enemy of the United States. It is very strange that it is allowed on public buildings and in any official context what so ever.
It is the flag of an enemy, that was once and for all defeated.
Free speech is there to give any single individual the right to fly the flag but for it, the enemy flag, to appear in any public setting is just wrong.

I do, however, support the flag being flown privately, especially since it makes "those people" go bananas over just a symbol.

I see the flag as symbol of rebellion, so leave it up.

In California, we have more Mexican flags than California flags.
