Ed Snowden Says Smartphones Can Be "Controlled"

Snowden in his latest revelations reveals your smartphone can be switched on without you knowing it, enabling AUDIO and VIDEO to be sent back to the NSA/GCHQ using capabilities named after SMURFs (those blue cartoon characters lol)

Once GCHQ had gained access to a user's handset, Mr Snowden said the agency would be able to see "who you call, what you've texted, the things you've browsed, the list of your contacts, the places you've been, the wireless networks that your phone is associated with. And they can do much more. They can photograph you.

Of course this is true. Smart phones for stupid people.

Rochard 10-05-2015 02:20 PM

There is no doubt in my mind this is true. It's disappointing that anyone ever thought otherwise.

klinton 10-06-2015 12:30 AM

exactly, he already told about that 2 years ago while in Hong Kong - and earlier before that all tech savy guys also knew that...
BBC just wanted "good" headline for their interview, thats why they had to chose something "screaming" for the public

It will come as a surprise to freedom loving people everywhere but why should ANYTHING come as a surprise to:

ROCHARD [Government Pet]

Friendly neighbor by day, evil agent of the Federal Government by calling. Don't forget, one day in the future when the government awakens to come and enforce its will on you, ROCHARD will be there with his boot on your throat. All you'll feel is the razor sharp studs on the sole of his boot and all you'll see is the red, white and blue of the American flag emblazoned on his boot before the feds shortly arrive to take you away. ROCHARD will take great pleasure in recording all your government gripes and secretly passing them on up the chain - he probably keeps a scrap book dedicated to the purpose of recording detractors.

I was musing earlier today that because my 4G mobile broadband dongle is actually an embedded Linux device, which you can telnet into and log into as root (if you know the password), it's likely that it could be taken over.

I just logged into it and confirmed that the telnet connection is listening on "any" address, not just the USB interface. In other words, you may be able to telnet into this device through the mobile interface... from the internet...

this is true. Smart phones have made people extra dumb. Some people stop thinking for themselves cause their phones hold all the answers. Then it use to be that the only bad drivers on the road were old people and drunks but now texting and driving is 6 times more dangerous than drinking and driving.

Don't get me wrong I love me phone but it doesn't run my life

Duh a smartphone though cool is the single best way to be tracked. Get a blackphone 2 or turing if you are that concerned. D-vasic pro free will tell you if your mic is being used, your camera, your speaker or bluetooth anything. free from the google store. Use a stingray monitor if you are concerned with interception or GPS location. Better yet use textsecure adn redphone for all your communication. Nothing is full proof I know and once they have you in their cross hair it's nearly impossible but the point is stay hidden in plain site. Encrypt your phone, enable 10 attempts until it bricks then they can't brute force it. Not much else they can do to then.

shiraz9944 10-07-2015 05:33 AM

oh and always always always use a good VPN while working

have you watched "deep web" on amazon, it's the full real snowden documentary from start to finish. The guy is a genius, the most advanced agency in the world NSA couldn't get him I'd say he's pretty good at what he does :) What I found cool was he put a sheet over his head to put his password in cause the NSA does have heuristic ways of seeng what you are typing in the open. He also says a 10 digit passcode would take the NSA 3 days to brute force open, so ya might wanna make those a bit better, or just like BB does you have 10 attempts and then the phone is bricked adn erased securely.

News flash: your phone needs to be tracked by the cell towers in order to maintain communication in the event that someone wants to call you.

No amount of simplification (ie using an old flip) will remove this fundamental requirement.

VikingMan 10-07-2015 10:00 PM

I hope the enjoy my farts and other disgusting personal habits. I always leave my phone on and uncovered so they get a good picture and audio. Time to shave my balls.

Amazon.com: Faraday Cage EMP/ESD Bags Premium 10pc 7.0mil THICK & Heavy Duty Nesting Kit X-Large Laptop / Notebook iPad Windows: Computers & Accessories

Here ya go, if you really don't want to be tracked at home......use these,I keep spare phones in them just in the event something happens along with a 60 kw solar charger. Then agin as was mentioned above he is right if it's in the bag you can't exactly use it LOL so what is the point!

shiraz9944 10-08-2015 03:22 AM

i mean when it comes down to it, if the NSA or GCHQ is after YOU and I mean really after you. There probably isn't much you can do other than give up all tech completely forever. OR get with a person who specializes in changing ID's and they do exist. Just expensive.

But other than that, they aren't some magical eye in the sky seeing all and knowing all, just stay off their radar and you'll be fine. When I mean a GOOD VPN I just meant one that uses openVPN 256 at least and keeps NO logs ever, some keep logs so your use can be correlated with things and you don't want that, but even that is minor and they would need to be onto you already. Use textsecure, redphone, surf on a VPN always, use secure WIFI also you'll be fine.

If you want to use a phone, yeah by nature they are going to know where you are LOL, that is the point, but ou can keep them from knowing what you are doing with the above programs. Wickr won't even allow the phone to take a screen shot of your screen and destructs the msgs when you tell it to. plus 512 bit encryption, no one can beat that. Use long long passwords, more than 15 characters. Get a samsung SSD and it has 256 encryption hardware built in, turn it on and make a good password, that way if it gets stolen in vegas or something it's useless to the person. Same with phones, who cares about locating your iphone if its stolen, encrypt it, then it's useless.

Also if you are using a VPN then connecting to TOR to get on say something you shouldn't don't do it at home please. Yeah you're pretty secure BUT you never know, use an encrypted laptop and use an open wifi at a cafe or something, you'll be fine.

Now the day quantum computing comes along......we might be fucked lol, they can break 512 bit in minutes. But I think we will just quantum to make nearly impossible algo's as well so it will continue to be a stalemate. One simple thing though to beat all the computing power in the world, when you encrypt your laptop, phone, home computer only allow 10 attempts before it's secure deleted. My S6 does this by default as do most blackberries. Really buying a blackphone is a waste all they do is use samsung knox to seperate the phone into two entities. The new app by mcafee is free and let's you know if your mic is being used, camera, speaker, everything, Very neat security. Also aomei has a stingray detector app you can use as well to see if you are being targeted since they only work on 2g.

klinton 10-08-2015 03:33 AM

how can you know that they actually do what they promise ? how can you be sure than lets say, 20 % of all VPN companies are not NSA honeyspots ? (did you read nsa "core secrets" leaked documents ?) ? there is no independent audit of vpn companies..they may write anything about what they deliver, but in reality, while browsing with them you may give up your privacy (datamining, datasharing etc.) even better than while using just your ISP...
