I've always wanted to know, are you idolizing the criminal bikers or the easy riders (aka hippies?) or the gay bar bikers?

I've never understood why you guys feel the need to dress up in ridiculous costumes just to ride a motorcycle. I mean when I go out on a boat I don't dress up like a pirate.

If you are talking about leather (jacket, gloves, chaps, boots), it's more a case of protection against a spill. Road burn can be extremely nasty and car drivers are typically unaware of anything outside their little bubbled cockpit when it comes to motorcycles. Some, of course, dress up in ridiculous Sons of Anarchy wannabe type attire, but for the most part, I would say the leather is safety equipment above all else.

All you need to ride is a leather jacket and gloves.

I quite often go riding wearing just a leather jacket and gloves.

I have had a few disapproving glances and some calling me a pervert.

You're taking your chances riding the highways without some leg and foot protection.

Contrary to what some believe, jeans will not protect your legs like leather will in a spill at highway speeds.

This is a great question. I am waiting to hear a legit answer on this but I doubt you will get it aside from a general excuse that it protects the rider from road rash.

I didn't spill a drop of blood because the chaps saved me

There are way better leathers out there to protect you if it was about "protection" than stupid biker jackets and leather chaps.. Most of those Harley style leathers aren't think or tough enough to do much of a job.. We all know it's just a peer pressure style code that everyone who wants to be a biker has to follow or the other guys in costumes point and laugh..

Kinda like teens in junior high school all have to wear the correct uniform for their chosen group.
