I don't want to defend him, on the contrary, but those tweets are almost 10 years old.

People change a lot in 10 years and he also apologize about this as far as I know.

Disney should check this before letting him make 2 movies.

It would be enough to distance themselves from Gunn's past time behavior, but to quit from a such successful franchise makes no sense.

I saw a very interesting breakdown of this, while what he said is not for everyone and they were obviously jokes.

When he was hired by Disney originally, they vetted him (apparently their system is insanely strict) and they knew about the tweets. I believe in 2009 or around 2 months before they announced him as the director he came out in public and addressed the tweets in question, saying he had a dark sense of humor and has since grown up and learned that it was in poor taste and no longer thought that was funny.

This is the Me too movement gone too far. People make mistakes, if they already atoned for them and addressed them like he did, I think this is unfair. I had different opinion a few days ago but now knowing that he discussed this years ago, I have changed my opinion

Funny thing is that they did, 2 months before they announced he would do Guardians he publicly addressed those tweets stating that it was immature and he had a dark sense of humor and has since realized they were not in good taste. Then Disney hired him, so they obviously knew, asked him to address it, saw that people seemed to accept it and thus went ahead with him.

If anything I think Disney is in the wrong here.

Yeah as I said in another post. It's the Me Too movement gone a muck. They were tasteless jokes but people mature and times change. The guy came out years ago and laid it on the table accepted his fate and people seemed to accept his apology. Are we now forever bound to our thoughts no matter the time period or our own personal development? That would be insane and counter productive to our growth as people.

Basically we are saying no one can learn and change? Shows that civil discussions or debates really are dead. We are going down a dark dark road.

It depends on what these sick, tasteless jokes are about. Even Mrs. Bladewire can recover from her idiocy here - but, at least to me, when you post the shit he did - how do you come back from that? Even if you take them as jokes, which I do not - something is profoundly wrong with him.

Matter of opinion, I hear where you are coming from. I come from the mentality that nothing is off topic comedy wise, if done correctly. Being obscene for the sake of being obscene (as it seems was the case with Gunn) is lazy rather gauche if you ask me. But I don't think it should be something that is tied to a person for the rest of their days, if you go back and look at his body of work, Gunn wrote Tromeo and Juliet, which is dark and wild. It seems this was his type of humor. Times changed and so did he it seems. He addressed the tweets before Disney hired him and if people accepted his apology then, I don't see what ground they have to stand on now.

Go look at his body of work, it's quite clear he is from a comic background. He has a lot of scripts that are dark and bizarre comedy. Patton Oswalt has a tweet that if you don't understand the comedic meaning behind it doesn't age well at all either. I am not saying what Gunn posted was funny, but it was 10 years ago and he apologized for it years before this whole thing happened. Again at what point are people not allowed to say, ''Yeah, they were jokes and in bad taste, I am sorry, I grew up a bit and realize how insensitive those were'' & we all just keep it moving. He apologized clearly because Disney asked him to address them, people seemed to accept it and thus Disney hired him. Now we are re-opening this can of worms again? I feel like the time was when he originally apologized, you aren't allowed to feign outrage now because he shits on Trump and now it hurts your feelings.
