I didn't really care for the original song much. Great video at the time, but the song never made it to my top 100 list. The Weezer video is... kind of boring. Nothing really new, and the nostalgia angle is being done to death lately it seems.

The Metal cover above is awful. The Deadpool version works but only for the Deadpool movie. Andie Case has a nice voice and is a cutie for sure, but... ZZZZzzz I'm tired of this song.

When I am in the mood for some 80's music I'll listen stuff from New Order, Joy Division, REM, Echo & The Bunnymen, Violent Femmes, Sonic Youth, Dead Kennedys, The Cult, The Cure, PFurs, The Church, Duran Duran, and on and on... I lean more towards 80's Alternative and Goth than towards Pop though... anyway out of all that, Ah Ha never once gets a click from me.

Except for this thread.

Fuck.

SilentKnight 02-23-2019 09:42 PM

Bypass the sax intro and skip to :35secs - check out the kickass bass line they come in with.

Good chuggin' tune IMO.

ErectMedia 02-24-2019 01:10 AM

Don't think ya should remake a song unless you're changing the style or making it better which they didn't. Certain songs I don't think ya should fuck with as good to go...

etc... :2 cents:

Original is original

CurrentlySober 02-24-2019 03:54 AM

Honest answer is that its not sufficiently different from the original to make me want to listen to it again. I enjoy a good cover when the band have re-interpreted some part or overall style of the song, but aside from a different style of middle 8, I could have thought I was listening to A-ha had I not been told different.

When I was put in foster care I listened to this song constantly thinking of my "mother" and what I could say or do to stop her addiction & abuse and make her want me. I hadn't seen the video until years later

I spent hours and hours and making out to A-Ha when I was in high school.

Their video was ground breaking at the time.

Sigh. I love 80s music.

Not me. I was the awkward dork who hung out in "the computer room" and join the chess club in high school. The girls I liked didn't know I existed. I did not become the sexy stud muffin I am today until I turned 18.

bronco67 02-25-2019 09:10 AM

Just like they did withToto's Africa, I feel like they didn't "Weezerize" it enough. Where's the crunchy guitar riffs?

I'm impressed with Cuomo's singing though. I've played this song on guitar and my voice breaks apart on the high notes.

That's an awesome cover. The Weezer version is just an imitation. I don't see the point of covering a song or remaking a movie if you're just going to copy the original.

That's actually not a cover it's a derivative work acoustic version arranged by Lars Horntveth of A-Ha and sung by Morten Harket, lead singer of A-Ha. You know they got paid massive money for that to end up in Deadpool 2.

The Weezer version is a cover with a compulsory cover license. Compulsory cover licenses don't require the permission of the copyright holder but you have to do the song pretty much exactly like the original otherwise you're going into a derivative work territory where you have to contact the license holder and negotiate with them how much more you're going to pay.

This is A-Ha's Morten Harket singing his Deadpool version of the song live in 2017 on MTV Unplugged.
