Balut (Or "Balot") is one of the Philippines' real native culinary delicacy that is sold every where in the streets. It is pretty much a duck abortion. It has to be in the top of some of the most exotic things I have ever eaten in my life. Balot is an aprodhesiac! Of course I had to try it !

What makes balot special is that it is not simply an egg with the white and the yoke. It actually has a half-incubated chick inside it.


Balot is akin to an aprodhesiac; why else would it be sold at night time by wandering salesmen shouting "BA - LUUT!" Of course eggs have that obvious fertility symbolic connection but balut is also considered to be strengthening - providing a burst of protein to replenish lost energy after an amorous encounter... The Filipino equivalent to post loving pizza.

Balut is eaten during the drinking sessions. It is a form of "pulutan" - food eaten when drinking alcohol. Recent studies by scientists confirm the importance of eating high protein foods when drinking alcohol as opposed to sugary or high carbohydrate foods. The visual grossness of Balut might also be stimulating to people lost in a beer haze. Certainly many foreigners need to be in this state before they feel ready to partake of this particular Filipino delicacy.

Filipinos love the shock value of Balot. They take every opportunity to dare foreigners to eat it and consume it teasingly in their presence. I had to try it twice cuase I was smashed the first time........ here are the pictures.....

They say it is very high in protien....... the girl in the first pictures took a load in her mouth the nest morning ! So so got double protien !

It kinda tasted like a hardboiled egg....... it was not crunchy.

The juice you drink when you crack the egg was kinda salty and fishy. You add a little salt and just mush it around in your mouth ?

I guess it was a cross between chicken nuggets and a hardboiled egg !

There was for sure slime........ but yeah it was pretty much like a hard boiled egg.

It is VERY popular here..... and it is the same as people eating french fries or pizza !

But it is much healthier

The man brought it right down to his system!!! I was there!!! Scary stuff... I eat balut all the time but never have it tried spreading the poor defenseless ducky in the palms of my hands...

hey i love balut... it is really yummy, you dont have to stare on the little chick inside the egg, hahaha, just close your eyes and eat it. it taste like chicken

I tlooks nasty but it is really good ! Nothing like eating a little duck fetus !

I was talking to someone about that the other day about traveling and experiencing the culture to it's fullest.

Food is a big part of a countries culture.

So until you ate Balut ..... you really have'nt experienced the Philippines to it's fullest :thumbsup

Well it is boiled but the duck fetus is not crunchy cuase it really has'nt developed.

This is what I heard also .......... the juice that you drink is the duck fetus's urine and the white around is the sh*t !

it is not only cool......... it is tasty !

When it comes to food you have to try everything twice to make sure you where not so drunk the first time !

I could eat this stuff everyday and I heard it is VERY healthy !!

Coming from the Philippines, I'm sure you'd be intrigued to know that there is ONE DELICACY that could quite possibly be more 'exotic' than Balut.....

What is it?

Day old chick. Basically, they wait for the chick to hatch and dip it in boiling oil until the 'chick feathers' are burned off and the skin is tasty... kinda like a mini-fried chicken.

I haven't tried it... nor plan on doing so anytime soon :(
