Serious Topic: Is this the beginning of the end of the World?
 

Never in my lifetime have I seen so many Natural Disastors with so many deaths. 200,000 in tsunami, 70,000 in earthquake, so many hurricanes and floods and such. The threat of a pandemic flu outbreak.

Then there isTerrorism and the threat of Nuclear war. Could all this be ignored? What is happening?

Don't know about the end of the world or human kind, but I think humanity is due for a little cleansing to balance out nature. If it doesn't happen naturally, I could see it happening through human intervention (war).

I watch ALOT of the Discovery channel (maybe too much) and it looks like as the years progress it will just keep getting worse.

Some say it is, but if you look in the past, there are many times in history where there is a period for a lot of natural disasters.

Who knows whats goin to happen, the best advise- just live everyday to the fullest and cherish the ones you love. You know never know what is going to come our way.

What is happening? Business as usual. The razing of Carthage, the fall of Syracuse, the Black Death, the Spanish Flu, both world wars... what we are in right now is a period of relative calm. The only reason it may seem otherwise is that in the past few decades, we have had a period of almost unprecedented wealth, peace and safety.

It only seems like more shit is happening because humans are occupying a larger percentage of the World, plus with availability of instant news reports from anywhere brings the disasters home to your living room on a scale never before possible.

Hurricanes have down periods. We just left one. This is normal. Earthquakes happen everyday, always have, always will. Tsunamis are not new, just ask residents in the Northwest United States, Japan and Hawaii.

But a category 3 Hurricane just hit Florida and some islands during Hurricane season? We also had a tremor on Saturday night in Los Angeles, part of the Pacific Rim.

Seems strange to me.

People often blame global warming for things not even near proven to be caused from it.

People often need a "reason" for why disasters happen, when all they have to do is look back in history to find out they have always happened.

Think of the earth as a big fluffy Golden Retreiver. When it gets too many fleas it gives a good shake and gets rid of some. Nothing new...natural disasters have been roughly on par for the billions of years the Earth has been here. Ask the Dinosaurs or the people of Pompei.

I think you are referring to recorded history rather than history in general. The Earth has been here for Billions of years and will probably be here for a Billion more. People on the other hand........

the only reason you hear so much about natural disasters today is the way the media works. today more people are watching tv and using the internet for 6-8 hours a day more then ever. thus is leading to people hearing about these horrific events more often then ever before. earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, etc... all normal its just nature. the reason you hear such phrases like "biggest hurricane in recorded history" is because recorded history is only about 50-100 years old.

but then again the mayans said we were going to die in 2012.. so if you believe it bust out the tin foil hats. personally im not worried about it. :)

also you say 200,000 in a tsunami, 70,000 in an earthquake. you do realize there are upwards of 6,000,000,000 people on this planet. so 270,000 people is just a drop in the bucket when looking at the big picture. now i know why so many people are having heart attacks these days. you're all worried about fucking dying by some natural disaster. what you don't know is your more likely to get killed by the cigs your smoking or the car your driving in. that being said put down the tin foil and quit worrying so much.

The intensity and number of natural disasters run in cycles.

Human population growth is relentless. Human caused deforestation of the planet is relentless.

Each peak in natural disasters finds a world with more people, and less trees and other vegetation.

We must be skeptical of forecasts for the future based on past experience when there were far fewer people, and far more vegetation.

The Mayan calendar ends in 2012. I think they knew something.
