Bush Wants To Merge U.S. With Mexico and Canada

Rep. Tancredo: Bush Wants To Merge U.S. With Mexico and Canada

Think Progress | November 26, 2006

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), one of the leading voices on immigration for the right, claims President George W. Bush is plotting to merge the U.S. with Mexico and Canada. An excerpt from WorldNetDaily :

Tancredo lashed out at the White House's lack of action in securing U.S. borders, and said efforts to merge the U.S. with both Mexico and Canada is not a fantasy.

?I know this is dramatic ? or maybe somebody would say overly dramatic ? but I'm telling you, that everything I see leads me to believe that this whole idea of the North American Union, it's not something that just is written about by right-wing fringe kooks. It is something in the head of the president of the United States, the president of Mexico, I think the prime minister of Canada buys into it. ?

You might think the right would immediately repudiate this kind of conspiracy theory. You'd be wrong. The National Review's Andy McCarthy came to Tancredo's defense :

This is not a fringe. It's a wave. It's fine to disagree with Rep. Trancredo; it's wrong to treat him like a lunatic when he is anything but.

More McCarthy:

[I]t's not unreasonable for people to look at Bush's immigration policies and worry that he is insufficiently alert to the internationalist pressures (what John Fonte calls ?transnational progressivism?) vigorously challenging the traditional understanding of sovereignty on many fronts.

Fox's Neil Cavuto recently said Tancredo ?owns? the issue of immigration predicted that ?if he were to run for president, he just might well be president.?

It's not. They are in fact planning a North American Union, much like the European Union. It's just a conspiracy theory that they are planning a total merge.

Nysus 11-26-2006 07:58 PM

Canada really wouldn't care to attach itself to the debt of the US in any way, unless the US has some moral scheme of making the money back.

Calling it a conspiracy theory is a bit much to be honest. A lot of people said and still say the same about the EU, claiming it is only an economic union. It is obvious to most though that EU has been chasing a wider goal for a very long time, and for the most part those who support it are going to push forward with it regardless of what others think. The North American Union may be different, as one player is so much stronger than the others, but in the decades to come I would not be surprised in the slightest to see a North American Union to follow the EU's path towards full governance.

that would be nice...even though canada is so close and culturally similar we are still a third world nation when it comes to a lot of things...just think, if this happened we could shop at amazon.com...

all crazy theories aside... i think it makes sense... let wealthy americans and canadians buy all the coastal land in mexico and the lower class mexicans can service those people.. btw, i dont mean that to be demeaning, but this already goes on in the world.. the poor serve the rich....

canadians come to the us to work and not pay taxes and mexicans come to the us to work and not pay taxes...

the only people i know from the US that go to live in canada or mexico are wanted by the police or the irs....

shitloads of americans buy property and live in canada due to the fact that the cost of living can be a whole lot cheaper. an american can live full time in canada for 6 months of the year with no citizenship, and without paying any dues other than their land taxes. the little town i spend my winters in out in bc is practically overran with americans.

no offence to any americans, but i wish you'd stay in your own damn country :thumbsup :1orglaugh

100% agreed. I still to this day do not understand why at the very least Canada and the US are not one country, or a very tight open bordered union. Mexico I can understand, it would cost billions just to get the country up to US/CA standards with crime, roads, irrigation, etc etc.

The EU has the right idea. Let's see the NAU next!

shemp, I certainly hope you weren't being serious. Have you noticed how well it is working in the EU?

Maybe your economy can handle it, but we sure the hell don't want to be associated with the mexican economy.

ive always been for open borders and free flow of capital...

Drake 11-26-2006 11:15 PM

It doesn't seem that far fetched. The economies of Canada and Mexico are already dependent upon the US.

Canamex has been in the works since 1995.

Some states and provinces have moved forward with planning related to the corridor and improvements of some highways that will be linked to the trade route. But, more than a decade later, there has yet to be major funding or a sweeping, coordinated effort related to the project.

If by happy you mean a weaker currency and future revolution, not to mention blood shed in the streets, sure. Sounds happy.

Not too many economies aren't :2 cents:

When the USA falls (if) then it would cause a global crisis and depression, not just in the USA, but nearly everywhere will feel the effects in their lifestyle.

The plan would be to assrape Alberta into submission and then use the oil money to pay off the debt. :winkwink:
