It's not you, Charles. People's attire in Europe tends to be less casual.
Take a look at pictures from any european event and you'll see women reps wearing suits, pantsuits,etc. and guys sporting suits.

This applies to general attitude as well, americans are much more laid back and a lot more casual compared to most europeans. The way europeans dress portrays the cultural and historical differences.

With all that said, i prefer to go the laid back route most of the time, but that's probably mainly because i lived in the US for a few years.
