In the Paris Metro tunnels [photosss]

So after trying to climb a crane and getting chased by guards and dogs for 90 minutes, I decided I needed an adrenalin bump, so headed into the train tunnels. This line [line 4] is particulally fucking nasty - 4 active lines: jumping from line to line to avoid trains will probably end in a trip, tangle zap combo.

Anyhow, fun snaps, enjoy.

Nah, not my thing.. Have some friends who are into it, but it's not really a long term hobby, you end up getting fucked hard for it in the end.

Mutt 11-01-2007 11:30 PM

you are insane - did you know how often a train would be coming? is there a ledge where you can run to if two trains from different directions at the same time.

i am getting old, all i'm thinking to myself is 'do his parents know what he is doing?'

have you or any guys you know who do this type of photography ever had a serious accidnet?

i forget the name of this - subex or something

Honestly, gear is totally irrelevant to a good photo. I shot these tunnels last time on a $100 1970 russian film camera [lomo] and got great results. This time, it was a Canon 1Ds w/ the 17-35mm glass on it. I honestly beleive that Great photos are made from great subjects, not gear..

Well, doing any of this stuff is a calculated risk. You'd never normally [I say normally, because New York was an exception] hit the tunnels until service has stopped for the night - but this doesn't rule out shunts, trains returning to depots, layed up trains, or service / maintenance runs. The only thing you can really rely on is your knowledge and trust that you'll react to a situation in a proactive fashion [ie, safely getting the fuck out of there] - as opposed to screaming and running in circles... Tunnels / Metro lines in paris vary greatly, and this is one of the more fucked lines. There are 4 live rails, raised about 1' off the ground, beside each track. This makes jumping the middle a complete bastard. [Undershoot, catch your foot, overshoot, run into another rail] - alcoves seem pretty rare on this line. In a snap, I'd be tossing my gear to the other rail, and jumping up into the cables on the side of the tunnel, but it's always risky.

My parents know. They don't like it, but there's not much they can do. It's not as if I'm drink driving or snorting blow.

I've managed to avoid fucking myself up, or landing in too much shit. It's hard to tell what is luck and what is skill. I don't know of any of my friends or anyone in the 'urbex' scene that have died from a result of doing this type of thing. There have been random injuries [one guy fell in theme park thing, fucked his back / pelvis], a few broken legs here and there, but I guess it's 'normal' to any hobby. It's hard to draw parallels between the hobby and injuries / deaths, as everyone has their own risk limits and style of exploration. I tend to err on the side of caution.

Shots were 20s - 60s on tripod. Film shots were 6 mins.
