Scarface was the very first one that came to mind for me. But Raging Bull was awesome too. That's one I can watch almost anytime.

To be the "best" of an era, the movie should define the era.

For better or worse, Fast Times at Ridgemont High WAS the 80s.

When I think of the 80's, the first movie that jumps to my mind is 'Back to the Future' . it's not a movie that I liked or disliked in some special way, but it's the first movie that jumps to my mind. And 'Breakfast Club' comes right after that.

This being said, I'd say 'Scarface' is one of the best if not the best, although I'm sure I'm forgetting many movies right now

devine 01-30-2009 01:36 PM

btw, I'd mention 'Dead Poet's Society', 'Platoon', 'Full Metal Jacket' and 'Born on July 4th' as well, although not sure if they're all from the 80's. Now that I think of it, what happened with all those Vietnam movies at that time?

ztik 01-30-2009 01:39 PM

HAHAHA, I want my two dollars!!! John Cusack had a lot of great, cheesy movies in the '80's. One Crazy Summer was another good one from him...

SordidMedia 01-31-2009 05:10 AM

Would appear so dated and corny now but I remember laughing at Beverly Hills Cop as a teenager in the 80`s. :)

Everyone loved that movie... and the sequels too. Time hasn't been kind to them though.

"48 Hours" is still watchable though. I thought Nolte and Murphy made a good team.

burntfilm 01-31-2009 10:26 AM

I just watched Goonies, and it was still a fun, "us against them" feel good type of movie.
There were a ton of those "Ferris Bueller" "Back to the Future" - light and happy type of movies back then, so they sorta define the era for me.

PR_Glen 01-31-2009 10:54 AM

A decade is too large a time frame and there are far too many movies that came out to just pick one to be called the best. I think one director stood out above all in that time however. Steven Spielberg did E.T., The Color Purple, and Empire of the Sun all in that time frame and all 3 of those movies illustrate such powerful tales of perseverance and immersed in lessons in tolerance that has rarely been matched since.

He even managed to toss in some kick ass Indiana Jones movies in between all those!

Ethersync 01-31-2009 11:25 AM

Weird Science :thumbsup

crockett 01-31-2009 11:27 AM

Aliens is one I can easily still watch today.. I'd say Alien but it was 1978 or 79.

Platoon always bugged the shit out of me at the end. When they dropped the napalm or what ever all over their own base, then when he comes too he's in a nice green jungle. It's like ok Hollywood fuckers yea couldn't have found a burnt Forest somewhere?

It was a good movie but that always annoyed me..
