(CNN) -- A plane crashed into a house in Clarence Center, a suburb of Buffalo, New York, on late Thursday, according to authorities.

Local media reported that the plane was Continental Flight 3407 from Newark, New Jersey, carrying 48 passengers, according to the FAA.

The plane went down shortly after 10 p.m., hitting a home and bursting into a fireball, according to New York State Trooper John Manthey. The wreckage from the plane is still smoldering.

The accident took place about seven miles from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

This is sad news.

I fly in and out of there on Continental all the time, but I stay away from Turbo props,
To many prop fractures for me to risk it, wonder if that will be the case here.
I know Hamilton Beach that makes the props have had several bad fuck ups over the years.

We've had crazy wind and lots of rain and ice here in WNY the past few days.

some company that makes or uses turboprops have discontinued their remaining crafts.

Crazy shit and crazy weather over there.

Good luck trying to get close. I live approx. 4 miles North of the crash scene. They have that area sealed off pretty well. Its very surreal to see the black and blue SUVs on every street corner from several miles away blocking things off.

I have friends that are fire fighters that are at the scene I am going to see if I can get any more info over what they have been reporting all night later. Whats amazing is how only one house was taken out. I had family that lived on that street several years ago. Those houses are pretty close. If that plane would have come in flat it could have wiped out the entire center of town.

very interesting. ice no doubt was the problem - whether it was the errors of the flight crew or the de-icing equipment on the plane not functioning - still to be determined.

i just read in the article candyflip linked to that that plane has a perfect record - no crashes whatsoever in its history.
