Shot a whole 'nother kinda' fox today [PICS]

Earlier today I had the unbelievably good luck of photographing a gorgeous red fox in the wild - just a few blocks from my home.

I was drivin' over to my parent's house for a brief visit and spotted the fox in a small nature park amongst some trees and bushes. I stopped, grabbed the camera...and began takin' pics.

The fox was completely unafraid...just curiosity. I crouched down with the camera and made no threatening or sudden movements - and the fox came within 4-5 feet from me while I fired away. A few times it bolted away - startled by the flash...but returned several times. I managed to get 94 pics in about 8-10 mins. of the little critter before he strolled away into the bush.

Those are pretty awesome pics. Poor fox is thin as hell. I love those eyes, they're just maniacal.

Hmm...I didn't think it was overly thin - I think it's still fairly young. It looked very healthy with a good coat on it.

Yeah, the eyes were something else. It was amazing to have this wild animal only a few feet away.

I may be a little overprotective - I live in a desert, but come on, there needs to be something in that gut!

:thumbsup

I'm no fox dietician - but with harvest time in Niagara region...somethin' tells me it ain't gonna starve to death. :winkwink:

Although they're primarily carnivores, still it was nibbling on an apple at one point - there are apple orchards all over the area.

Maybe it'll find my neighbour's yappy little chihuahua. :thumbsup

Take care of two issues with one action: That's Managerial!

If you video it and stick it on metacafe, you might make a few bucks in five years.

God bless commerce.

Cute fox :thumbsup

Foxes are usually pretty lean, that one looks healthy.

Kudos for shooting nature with a camera and not a gun. :thumbsup

I have a good sized greenbelt area along one side of my house. When I moved here in 1997, we had a family of foxes that would use my driveway and sideyard as a thoroughfare from out of the woods. About twilight every evening momma, daddy and two kits would come walking along for their evening out. After that summer, they disappeared until the next year. In mid summer.. momma starts running around with two new babies..showing them the ropes. Late that fall, one of the adults got killed on the road. Haven't see another one since.

We do have coyotes that will take away stray cats, owls, raccoons, skunks, and deer that regularly come around my stream and ponds to drink. Then there's the eagles, kingfishers and the great blue heron that like to go fishing for my trout.

pics are gorgeous - so is the fox, looks very young and healthy. i think all animals are Disney characters, i'd try to pet him and have my hand chewed off.

You mean they're not?!

It actually went through my mind at the time - what if it gets close enough for me to reach out and touch it.

To be honest, when I'm behind the camera I don't think of the potential consequences sometimes. I'm totally thinking of - gotta get the pic....gotta get the pic.

Niagara region - ten minute drive from Niagara Falls.

Glad to hear you went to the trouble of checkin' them out on a bigscreen. :thumbsup

Yeah, usually I see them at a distance...runnin' away.

We get the occasional coyote in the area as well - but those I'd give a wide berth.

Great pics, SK!
