60 megapixel image of Los Angeles skyline [pic]

I took this from the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles when I was down there this weekend.

This is a 60 megapixel image that I stitched together in Photoshop.

http://www.serialmedia.com/LA_2_GFY.jpg

It's 38 megs. I'm going to break the link in about an hour, but since I'm paying for a chunk of bandwidth I'm not using... I figured I'd share it with you.

The 450 meg PSD nearly destroyed my Core i7 and came close to running out of memory. LOL

+1... if it's 38MB compressed then it's going to need a sizeable amount of memory for raw rendering, and a browser isn't going to be optimised or even prepared for that sort of situation. I'm guessing the long side is roughly 10000px?

Massive skyline, tiny buildings. :)

MrMaxwell 12-01-2009 04:35 PM

Fucking hell
What kind of camera is THAT
And what in the hell do you store the raw images on... Do you swap huge hard drives in and out of the camera, or what?
What is this?
I'm downloading it now.. Doubt I can eve see this ..

calmlikeabomb 12-01-2009 04:37 PM

Cool stuff. Then when you zoom in you can see the domains on the buildings haha.

tiger 12-01-2009 05:00 PM

That's a fair bit more than 60 megapixels, I think you got your calcs wrong......

How about using something like zoomify to tile and break it up? (if it can handle an image that size)

That way people can view it with a browser, and they don't need to download the entire image.

I've done this with ~150MP images and it's no sweat for a standard browser, so long as flash is installed. :2 cents:

Meeper 12-01-2009 05:14 PM

A little more to the right and you woulda gotten our office in the mix. Great shot bro.

Technically the image is currently 200mp. But the picture I took is 60mp. Since the stitched image was so extremely wide, I needed to expand the sky. What I did to bring it up to a standard 3:2 ratio suitable for printing was to do a "Layer via Copy" on the sky, and then do a Transform > Scale, and stretched the sky up to fill in the missing portion of that ratio.

It ended up looking much better than having a crazy long image that wouldn't really be too easy to print with such an odd ratio. But what technically came out of the camera was actually 60mp.

rowan 12-01-2009 05:23 PM

One of my 150MP images has a crazy aspect ratio like 15:1, lol... difficult to print and somewhat difficult to view too... but that style of photo would probably look great in a corporate lobby...

Redmanthatcould 12-01-2009 05:25 PM

Awesome photo :)

xenigo 12-01-2009 05:29 PM

I was thinking the same thing. I was considering the possibility of printing a bunch of 8x12's and mounting them on foam-core in my office. I could do one of San Francisco as well. What I like about the way it turned out is that it's not obviously a stitched panorama. It doesn't look distorted the way a lot of them typically do.

I bet if I sent it to an actual print shop, they could do it on one big sheet...

umbralui 12-01-2009 05:34 PM

Just an awesome picture :thumbsup

Yep, I'm sure you could find somewhere that can do an arbitrary width (or rather length from their perspective) print. I have one nearby that offers it as a special service... special=$$$ :1orglaugh

Looked up zoomify?

papill0n 12-01-2009 11:00 PM
