CAL bank (Isreal) stops processing most ecommerce transactions

Shap touched on this a few days ago in one of his threads, and it just happened, but CAL, one of the few banks that still aquire for high risk internet sales, had notified many of their merchants that they can no longer process for them. something like half a billion porn transactions a year that they can no longer settle

lots of people in this industry have/had merchant accounts at cal. huge programs running on their own merchant accounts, processors, merchant account providers

Huge news, you can imagine how many people are scrambling right now to find a place to process their cards

Yep, I had a meeting with a guy who does banking for 30 different programs, 60 corps - I knew this was coming.

He also had some serious dirt on one of the other gateways (not netbilling).

I heard it was one guy who pretty much blew this up.

Can you guess who it is?

halfpint 12-03-2009 07:38 PM

Its time to get phone billing alongside credit card billing incase it does all go pear shaped :2 cents:

that's a serious softball of a question...

gonna be real interesting to see how this all shakes out, to say the least

Isreal is not a proper country for web based business because of bank monopoly (they have 5 major banks, all are national), and high tax rates. I realized that after living there for 3 years, so I moved.

tical 12-03-2009 08:21 PM

This shit was obvious a long time ago. Years ago.

The pieces were all there, no one bothered to connect the dots though.

Bank of Israel in money laundering audit at Cal Credit Card Services

By Eran Peer

The central bank is believed to be unhappy with Cal's activity in clearing payments at gambling and pornography sites. The Bank of Israel is carrying out a money laundering audit at Cal (Israel Credit Cards Ltd.), managed by Boaz Chechik. Cal is Israel's second largest credit card company. It issues Visa and Diners cards, and is owned by Israel Discount Bank (TASE: DSCT) (71.8%) and First International Bank of Israel (TASE: FTIN1;FTIN5) (28.2%).
The audit will examine, among other things, the clearing of electronic commerce of overseas Internet sites by subsidiary Cal Properties,. The overseas activity, which includes clearance for gambling and soft pornography sites, contributed NIS 92 million to the company's revenue, or 12% of the total. Because of the nature of the activity, the profit margin is very high, and the contribution to profit was NIS 40 million, 24% of the total net profit.

Sources in the banking system said that the audit at Cal was designed to send a message to the company from the Bank of Israel, and pointed to the "reputation risk" that arises from this kind of activity. It is believed that the Bank of Israel is unhappy at Cal's involvement in clearing payments at gambling and pornography sites, and would prefer it not to engage in it.

In response, Cal said, "This is a routine audit that will take several months. The audit is examining processes and procedures, and overseas activity. All Cal International's activity has received the Bank of Israel's approval and blessing."

Les Grossman 12-03-2009 11:10 PM

Fuck it... I can get $50 PPS by sending sales to the very companies that will get all the adult banks shut down. Piss on you guys, I'm gonna get paid.

so yes, you don't know what you are talking about.
the ability to process visa cards will not change. bad banks come and bad banks go.

your method of picking up crumbs of information and then shouting about the slice of inaccurate bread you've created doesn't always work out. :thumbsup

so whats next? a few predictable scenarios:

1) the shit starts running downhill, more programs shut down, affiliates get screwed

2) the same bad apples who caused this have set up banking someplace else and have put the wheels in motion to possibly take another bank down?
