Laptop Stolen!!! FUUUUCK!

So I become the next victim of a laptop theft. After I've been half way around the world, I make a rookie mistake and pick up a hitchhiker in the Dominican Republic and she leaves along with my laptop I had on my rear seat. Fucking bitch!

I used to hitch hike a lot back in a day when I toured around Europe so it always gave me great pleasure to give back to the "community". As anyone who's picked up hitchhikers before can confirm, you typically want to make people whom you give the lift feel comfortable so when she threw her bag on the rear seat I didn't make a big deal out of it - she wants to have room for herself to sit comfortably... right? Then when she went in and out of her bag a few times to get a lipstick and what not, I still had my fucking head in the gutter. Fucking newb. I can't believe I wasn't being suspicious in a POS country like Dominican Republic.

So anyway, call me an idiot - I have been calling myself that for days. My laptop is gone and everybody is telling me that it's gone for good. I filed a report with the DR police who didn't even ask what she looked like or where I dropped her off. They just wanted my passport number so they can file a report and put it on the shelf. I had pictures from my travels so far on it, most of which I did not have backed up (fucking newb, call me an idiot again...). I had contacts, emails and all that shit that I failed to back up. My life as of late was all about adventure and I neglected the need to back up as I have neglected to need to pay for some LoJack shit for laptops and... most importantly - never trust anyone and always be suspicious while on the road.

Anyway, I know I am not the first person to have had their laptop stolen. I remember several people over the years bringing that shit up on GFY. Has anyone had luck recovering their laptops? If so, whom or what did you use? Can anyone recommend good private investigators in the Dominican Republic? I have already paid some thugs form the POS and got a few leads. I want my laptop back and am ready and willing to pay to get it back. Anyone with practical advice on what a guy could do to recover it? I want to believe that impossible is possible. Too much value went with that one machine

:helpme please :upsidedow

Hiring a PI in the DR to track down your laptop sounds like throwing good money after bad.

David! 01-22-2010 12:31 PM

I use lojack for laptop http://www.absolute.com/products/lojackforlaptops
It allows you to remotely delete all files and may allow for a stolen laptop to be recovered, although if it is stolen outside of the US, it might be hard to get it back.

Tom_PM 01-22-2010 12:34 PM

What we need is a resident program that allows you to remotely spray ink in the thiefs face and alert some authority of their gps coordinates.

baddog 01-22-2010 12:46 PM

While I have used Lojack on my laptop before I am not sure that it works in other countries. I have it on my bikes and car and pretty sure it does not work in Mexico.

That's exactly the lesson I have learned - you are most vulnerable when you are helping someone. Because naturally you expect everyone to be appreciative. I mean, if someone did me a favor, I'd do my darn best to show how grateful I am. So if you offer a helping hand, that's when you least expect to be ripped off which makes you extremely vulnerable.

Back when I was in the uni, I spent 6 consecutive summers hitchhiking across Europe, spending hours upon hours in other people's cars. We often stopped to pick up weed then I would be invited to crash in that person's house - such good memories. Then when I got a job and bought my own car, I returned the favor. I gave countless people a lift and loved being able to give back after years of taking. It would never have occured to me that someone would be hitching and looking to combine it with theft. Fucking Dominican Republic piece of shit

I was going to get that for my new laptop but when I sent an inquiry about it working in Mexico they simply ignored it.

thats why i dont bother helping anyone out. the chance of someone actually not stealing from you or trying to kill you is very small

Tasty1 01-22-2010 02:24 PM

I always pick up hitchhikers, depending how they look. But cause students can travel for free, there aren't much. Last time a had some hitchickers from latvia (Letland). Always fun to hear where they are going. But i never put something on the back seat, drop all my stuf in the back.

If you read both sentences it would probably make it easier to figure out. :2 cents:

Quoted for the absolute truth.

And why I thank Apple from the bottom of my heart for making it all so painless with Time Machine. I am so frikking anally retentive and scared of losing all my data, I have the Time Capsule in the family safe in the basement plugged into an internet cable that passes through the back of the safe. The safe came with the house cos it's so frikken huge and I had to pay to have it opened that I paid for a hole in its back to pass an ethernet cable through....

Not necessarily the theft, but cos it's fireproof to 3 hours (not quite so sure now it has a hole in it!!!!), I figure my backup drive stands more chance there keeeping my data safe and that of my family than anywhere else.

THANKFULLY though, I've never had my data stolen.

Though the backup has been tried and tested (macbook to imac transfer)

Darkcrni 01-22-2010 03:39 PM

That's why i backup X5!

Sorry man!

Hawkeye 01-22-2010 03:54 PM

I bet if you drove back down that road, you'll see her again.

Pick her up in a different car and get some payback.

he probably didnt do anyone a favor. she probably wasnt a hitchhiker then a thief. probably used it to aid in her thievery

pornask 01-22-2010 04:04 PM

Yeah, smart people learn from other people's mistakes. Back up your data today. You won't realize how much of a service you are doing yourself until such time comes....

I keep trying though. So far I have been on three radio shows, the most popular radio host from the area where I picked up the bitch (she must either live there or work there or have some form of connection to the place) put the info on his website and brings it up three times a day. $1000 goes a long way in the DR (have not considered hiring a hitman so far, but I keep my options open) and I have promised a reward for an information that will lead to recovery of the laptop. Today I have also had an announcement on national TV and a couple of newspapers possibly tomorrow. I'm gonna get whole country talking about a stolen notebook and everybody drooling for $1k to keep their eyes open. I have a very solid lead but the bitch has been hiding and the family has not heard from her since the day she took ride with me. Her cell phone is ringing, but nobody answering. I have also found the hair in my rental car which I'm taking with me to the RCMP once I'm back in Canada. Since it's a rental car, it may not be hers, but somebody else’s, but it's something. Fucking bitch is gonna pay.

That's kind of what I did. I knew where i picked her up and where I dropped her off. The drop off site is irrelevant, as she's obviously asked to get dropped off as soon as the laptop was safely in her bag so she doesn't spend extra time with me in case I look to the back, however pick up location must be in some way connected to her life. Dominican Republic is an island nation. I came back to the town and good a few of the thugs who hang out in the area talking for money. I've described the bitch and bells started ringing. I sent on of the people who sort of knew her to her house to ask if she was there, but the parents said that she'd left for Santo Domingo on Friday evening and hasn't come back yet. This exactly coincides with day and time I have picked the bitch up and she was also headed for Santo Domingo. The thug pretended he was her friend and the family got him bitches cell phone number. From what these thugs are telling me about her and describing her - sounds exactly like the one I've picked up. It's a lead I am following up on. The unit has likely be sold in the meantime, but I have hundreds of thugs hungry for a $1000 reward tracing her down.

Sorry about your loss, but that is ridiculous.

I backup every time my macbook tells me, which is every 10 days I think.

rayadp05 01-22-2010 05:22 PM

That really sucks. It doesn't sound like you will every see it again either. If it were me, I would try to track her down and if I found her, I would rape the fucking bitch, beat her face in with a brick and then immediately take the next available flight back to America.
