One in four Americans obese

Please, do yourself and everyone around you a favor by refraining from stuffing Twinkies and calling remote clicking "exercise."

You know, while I will agree that a lot of Americans should put down the spoon and take a walk instead, I think the line for what does or does not constitute obese is a little unfair.

Supposedly, I should weigh something like 175-180. That is just never going to happen unless I get very, very sick. To suggest that someone of my build is obese at 220 tilts the scales to give a skewed impression.

fatfoo 06-29-2010 06:15 PM

Everybody can lose fat.
Diet and exercise is the way.

Overload 06-29-2010 06:19 PM

the problem is mostly caused by multiple low wage jobs ... the less ppl earn, the worse their food ... inbetween jobs there is little time to cook so ppl tend to use fast food ... i wud luv to see WHO outta which social level is obese ... i bet the poor are fatter than wealthy peeps ... and it starts with kids menues at $.99 :( did ya know food has an effect on how your brain works? less vitamins = less gray matter agility ...

And food company's use high fructose corn syrup as a cheap substitute to keep the cost down so low and that shit is so bad for kids. It begins a vicious cycle.

I make a lot of meals at home and I have found that it's cheaper to cook at home. I can easily feed the four of us for $7-10/meal, which normally includes leftovers.

I'm starting to get kinda irritated about the whole obese thing, it's just not healthy! If you are an adult and want to be obese and have health insurance, go for it. The minute you suck one dime from the tax dollars of the people and still drink soda, I think you should be forced to diet.

Now who I really feel bad for is the kids. I see soooooo many overweight kids at the gym and at the pool, it's so sad. I can't imagine being that heavy at the ages of some of these kids - and I was chunky when I was a kid. Get your kid off the couch, turn off the videos games and have them play outside!

It's a trend in life styles that's been going on for years.

Over eating.
Bad diets.
Fast food.
Too many Sodas.
Lack of exercise.

It not only contributes to obesity it also contributes to hyper active children. Governments needs to step in and make sure the food we eat is good for us.

The warning labels, countless studies, countless lectures aren't enough?

It's like cigarettes. We have ALL of this information about how bad cigarettes are for you. Yet people still smoke. They still start smoking. They continue to smoke even though they know it's terrible for them.

People want instant gratification. No long haul mentality. I do not want the government regulating the two Oreo cookies I eat a week. I eat responsibly. It's not difficult. Anyone can do it.

And yes, poor people can eat healthy, too. I'm sick of that argument. It's true, convenient crap foods are cheap and of course they are attractive to poor people. Work two jobs to get by? It's difficult, I understand that... take bag lunches with you. Those are cheap and healthy.

ha, just weighed myself and i'm actually hovering around 200. weird.

Fallacy. You can sit on your ass all day long and have a reasonable weight. While exercise is great and certainly helps, caloric intake is where it's at. If you eat 2500 calories a day, your body only needs 1600 calories a day... burning 900 calories a day would take a massive amount of exercise. That's a lot of calories to burn. Caloric intake.

how would you know?

PR_Glen 06-30-2010 08:17 AM

Americans don't have a chance.. they put high fructose corn syrup in anything affordable, there are growth hormones in most milk available and beef. Super fatty foods are cheap as dirt.. Sure you can say vegetables are cheap and affordable but most grocery stores aren't around the corner anymore with suburban neighbourhoods now so going shopping becomes less frequent because of that.

Also 1 in 4 is a loaded number, because that is based on the bmi calculator which is not exactly a perfect scale.. if you work out every day are very health conscious but go heavy in the weight room you could be considered obese by that calculator just the same. I was considered obese when i finished my first full marathon and running 10k a day..

I think the term obese that we think of, that also angers us, are the marshmallow people that need scooters to get around because of their size. I saw one at a burgerking drive through the other day... was pretty sweet... however that number is not as high as 1 in 4...

Yeah, they are usually there with their overweight parents and either just sit on a machine and text or do the most half-assed routine I've ever seen.

There are some younger girls though who are fit and they really do workout when they are there.

I also go to the YMCA as my gym, so it's not like LA Fitness or anything.

My highest calorie burn day was around 850-900, about a 15 mile bike ride, two mile run and full lifting routine. I'm on a 1200 calorie diet, if I work off those calories obviously are added on and my body is allowed more carbs, fat, etc. But not sugar. Sly is right, it's about calories and also sugars, which is usually where the calories come from.

all that exercise = 900 cals burned?

Oh sorry I lied. Everything was cut in half that day - so eight miles of bike riding, one mile run and working out. That equaled about 850 calories.

Guess I should have looked at my fitness app before posting the first time.

Still a ton of exercise over 850 calories when lots of people eat more than that in one meal.

Caloric intake!

hey no worries, it still seems low to me, is biking 8 miles only good for a few hundred cals burned? working out can be like 500, so i was just wondering....... i don't know a whole lot about what exercises burn how much, other than the ones i do, lolz so i guess i don't even know how much you burn running a mile eh. but i figure 500 cals for my resistance training and 500 cals per 30 minutes of the cardio i do.

is that calories burned during the exercise or overall? most people think they sit on a recumbent bike and burn 200 calories on it that they only burned 200 calories... but what really happens is you burn far more after your workout and when you sleep.. given that it is done at a decent intensity anyway...

xmas13 06-30-2010 11:11 AM

Shut up already fatties :1orglaugh

Rochard 06-30-2010 11:29 AM

I am 5'11" and come in at 216blbs. I'm forty one years old. I just went to the doctor's this morning for my yearly physical, and according to my doctor 220lbs for my height is considered obese. I should also mention that I normally run about a mile a day.

But here's the problem... Entertainment these days is either watching TV or on the computer. I myself am I on the computer usually about ten hours a day. Yeah, I'm getting fat.

That does not seem accurate either. At least not according to my counter. I think you are shorting yourself significantly.

man that made me laugh. As if governments (i.e. politicians) want everyone to be healthy, mentally alert and able to think more clearly.

They want you and I to be "dumbed down" to the last degree so we can NEVER question their authority, and can never remove them from power and control of us.

Sorry but that's about as naive a statement as I've read on GFY for many a year.
