amazing pictures of lightning striking the statue of liberty [pics]

Can you imagine waiting more than 40 years to get a photo just right? That's precisely what New York photographer Jay Fine did to capture the images below.

And Fine's teenage dream came true on the evening of Sept. 22, when he headed down to lower Manhattan's Battery Park, which has a nice view of the Statue of Liberty.

With his Nikon D300 and 60mm f2.8 lens in hand, the 58-year-old snapped more than 80 photos over two hours. He struck gold with the photo below around 8:45 p.m.

"I had been watching weather reports so I knew a storm was coming and it just seemed like a great opportunity," he told the U.K.'s Daily Mail. "It was pure luck really, a once in a lifetime opportunity."

i pretty much concluded the author was taking some artistic license with that comment. i doubt the photog was literally waiting 40 years to take this picture. :1orglaugh

not sure if the lightning is actually hitting the statue, or in behind it on land? He just happened to be inline with the statue, Take a closer look, to me it seems like its hitting land.:2 cents:

Lightning in general is fucking amazing. One of the coolest natural phenomena.

Cyber Fucker 10-13-2010 11:34 AM

I like it. :)

ottopottomouse 10-13-2010 11:45 AM

Lines up fairly well but it's not coming down on the statue.

Lykos 10-13-2010 11:51 AM

Looks amazing indeed :thumbsup

dyna mo 10-13-2010 11:56 AM

yeah, a 300 foot tall hunk of copper sitting in the middle of water & nothing, that gets struck by lightning ~600x a year on average and that bolt is hitting something 2 miles away but lines up perfectly.

i got it now.

bronco67 10-13-2010 12:27 PM

I could photochop that in about 2 minutes.

dyna mo 10-13-2010 12:29 PM

here's the photog's flicker stream, he also discusses the shot and has some other amazing shots

czarina 10-13-2010 12:40 PM

there goes America!

Phoenix 10-13-2010 12:42 PM

ive always wondered why we dont harness electricity from lightning.

storage of the power?
harnessing the power?
i wonder what the major obstacles are, im guessing handling that much flow at once...surely their must be ways to grab it, molten salt or something wacky like that

off to google...if i see anything cool ill post it

Zuzana Designs 10-13-2010 12:47 PM

Wow that's awesome!
