Bad news for atheists -- evolution works agains them?

Interesting. Fundamentalism may outbreed secularism.

In a world in which childbearing is rarely accidental and almost never rewarding economically, birthrates increasingly reflect values choices. And so, by Darwinian process, those who adhere to traditions that preserve and celebrate the ancient injunction to “go forth and multiply” wind up putting more of their genes and ideas into the future than those who don’t. As Kaufmann shows, fertility, over time, plays out like compound interest. That is, even if religiously fundamentalist families only have a few more children than secular or religiously moderate counterparts, and they can keep those children holding on to fundamentalist faith and values (especially related to child-bearing), the passage of generations will greatly magnify their numbers and influence. Similarly, secularists and others who choose to have only one or two children, and who pass those values on to their children, will, over time, see their population decline precipitously.

"childbearing is rarely accidental"??!?

andrej_NDC 11-27-2010 05:07 PM

The more religious the parents are, the less are their children. So I don't think it has much of an impact.

This quote addresses that assertion:
Quote:

According to a study published in the American Journal of Sociology, three quarters of the growth of conservative Protestantism in the United States is explained by the compounding effect of this population?s higher birth rates over the last century as compared with mainline Protestants. Moreover, the correlation between fundamentalist faith and high fertility continues as we travel still further along the spectrum of religious belief and practice. So, for example, the ?Andy Weaver? Amish, who are perhaps the strictest of all in their rejection of modernity, have higher fertility (average 6.2 children per family) than the do the New Order Amish, (4.8 children) who starting in the 1960s made such concessions to progress as allowing electricity into their homes.

Similarly within Israel, ultra-Orthodox Jews, or Haredim, with an average of nearly seven children per family, are far outbreeding merely Orthodox Jews, to say nothing of more secular Israelis. Accordingly, we now find a profound generational difference in Israeli society that reverses the pattern of history that even many religious people once supposed would inevitably lead to the decline of ancient beliefs and customs. Today, just 2.3 percent of Israelis over age 80 are Haredi. But such is the demographic momentum of this sect that 16 percent of all Israeli children under 10 are within its fold.

So this is the explanation of why the world is filled with religious nut jobs?

closer 11-27-2010 05:17 PM

This is not only applicable to being Atheist or not, but a general rule of life. Have at least 2 children or your family line gets extinct.

The misconception about evolution is that it selects for the "Best" and the "Smartest". No it doesn't. It selects for the FITTEST in light of conditions. Being well adapted does not necessarily mean being the best. One KEY aspect of fitness is the ability to pass on one's genes.

Yeah, yeah, idiocracy vs. the Flynn Effect

DaddyHalbucks 11-27-2010 06:34 PM

Maybe. But if successive generations keep getting smarter, it may reverse the religious breeding advantage.

For most intelligent people, billions of years of fossil records are hard to refute.

CyberHustler 11-27-2010 07:06 PM

Fossil records have nothing to do with it. Just because evolution is a proven fact, it doesn't mean there is no god like thing out there doing godly things. Seriously. You can't get something from nothing, there is something out there that has always existed. That thing might be some type of god or something.

You're right, my whole family is very religious(Catholic) and I love shocking them with my atheist comments + My partner in business comes from a Mormon family and he hates religion, smoke joints and fuck every single girl that cross his way

So because not everything can be explained you fall back to the god thing? That's nothing more than an excuse for not thinking. "I have no idea so it must have been God."

No... I never said that. I just said it COULD be a godly type thing. Nobody alive KNOWS what the fuck is really going on yet.

But let's go to church, give money to churches, pass laws that jibe with the bible/koran, start wars and shun science just in case there is a god? Religion should be treated like the disease it is.

GOD is the imaginary entity one relates to when s/he comes to her/his wisdoms end ... just becoz we cant explain it yet doesnt mean there is some "higher entity" ... religion is the worst crap mankind EVER imvented :2 cents: mankind MADE gods, NOT the other way around :2 cents::2 cents::2 cents:

That's a horrible way of thinking though, and definitely isn't going to help anything. If you don't have the answer for someone, don't worry about it, because God did it?

This world needs a big fucking slap around the head and one major wake-up call. Religions...Gods were the ancients (quite reasonable) answer as to why we exist, they worked out eons ago that using cause and effect nothing made any sense, even now it makes no sense, either the universe has always existed and will always exist or it has a beginning and an end. How do you magic something out of nothing ?? You create a God or God'S.

Most of my family is devoutly religious. I spent two years attending a christian school. My brother, sister and I are all atheists. With one exception, all of my cousins are non-believers of varying degrees.

Unfortunately that doesn't really translate across to Islam. Muslims, especially in the West, seem to want to attach themselves to the religion so they belong to something.

He didn't say it was god, he said something is omnipresent and who knows, maybe it is a godly thing. Evolution doesn't disprove a godly power, it disproves the Christian fairy tale. There could still be some godly driving force behind creation, at least while using evolution as your defense. The fact that evolution happened doesn't really disprove anything on either side of the Atheism argument. It works fine as an argument against christian fundies who think god creating man as we know it a few thousand years ago. It proves Christians are wrong, not the existence of a high central power, nor Atheism...

Tell me about it. I've seen it in a lot of your ramblings. Like it or not, most devoutly religious parents have children that aren't believers.

Out of the millions of possible explanations the ONE that most people cling to is the existence of a God. Humans lack imagination.

Just because I said something out there could be godly, it means I support religion and shit?

Damn, a lot of you GFY dudes are purely retarded.
