Generally a rebuilt transmission is also okay (but one just pulled from the junkyard and not rebuilt is a big risk). The key is to make sure the people putting it in know what they are doing and will stand behind their work and parts. Don't even think about it if they won't guarantee parts and labor (needs to be both) for at least 30 days. And it ought to be a longer warranty period than that ideally. 3k isn't bad as long as it's a quality shop or dealer and not some place like Aamco.
