Thought about that but the car is sound otherwise, and the fam loves it so..

A pin or something broke loose and blew right through the transfer case, drained out red fluid all over my garage floor.. looked like car blood.

What kind of car is it? I can probably get you in touch with someone who will be able to rebuild it for cheaper than 3k depending on what it is, in the Phoenix area.

From my limited understanding of mechanics, putting in a new tranny is a laborious job, most of that 3K would go to labor costs. If that's the case, why would you put a used tranny in and risk it breaking in a year?

I've had a few trannies go myself. I feel your pain.

Generally a rebuilt transmission is also okay (but one just pulled from the junkyard and not rebuilt is a big risk). The key is to make sure the people putting it in know what they are doing and will stand behind their work and parts. Don't even think about it if they won't guarantee parts and labor (needs to be both) for at least 30 days. And it ought to be a longer warranty period than that ideally. 3k isn't bad as long as it's a quality shop or dealer and not some place like Aamco.

All you do is disconnect the transmission from the motor, drop whatever is underneath it (exhaust, support bars whatever) and disconnect the driveshaft if it's a RWD car... it's not that complicated.

I had the transmission in my car built for $1500 and it has lived behind the power my car makes for over a year without issue... and the 4l60e transmissions are notoriously weak links in the drive train. It's lived daily with 415whp and driving in stop and go traffic in the over 100* heat.

I still have no idea what kind of transmission it is though, so 3k could be a steal if it's a complicated transmission like one of the 7spd automatics in the Benz's.

Top Gear Motorsports in the Phoenix area offers a 1 year warranty on their rebuilds. I would never take a transmission anywhere else. They're going to build the 4l80e that goes in the car when I do the turbo set up, because even if it does blow up they'll rebuild it free for a year.

I use the same tranny shop that my Dad has used for almost 40 years. One year or 12,000 mile parts and labor warranty. Second generation family owned.
