I think every person that is suddenly caught unprepared would be attracted to a house running a generator in their search for food/water. I'd rather avoid that aspect of an emergency as well.

Remember seeing hours long lines waiting to get a gallon of water just days after hurricanes? In cold climates you could run a space heater though.
