if you lived in a disaster prone area, would you have a proper disaster preparedness kit & plan?
i've lived in shit tons of places that are prone to earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, flash floods, never had a plan/kit.
but i'm thinking of getting an earthquake kit. |

I have one (along with a plan) because I live in a seismic zone.

We always stock up on everything at the beginning of Hurricane season. Water, long-shelf life food, propane for cooking, gas for the generator, batteries, etc. We have long range walkie talkies if the cell towers go out, camping stoves, solar water heaters for showering, etc....
Having lived in LA during the 1994 Northridge quake, I"m not sure what an "earthquake kit" would consist of.... . .

i rather not move in any of those areas, but if so i'd probably take care to have at least a weeks supply of water, food and a generator. and some camping equipment for the worst emergencies

I do.
I live in Northern California, north of Sacramento. While we don't have earthquakes here in my area, California does, and anything is possible. I lived through the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and for me the biggest thing was four days with no power. No power means everything in your fridge goes bad in 24 hours, and your living off of canned goods. No power also means no stores - no power to run the lights or cash registers. So we keep a lot of canned goods on hand - A LOT of canned goods, enough for the three of us to live off of for a few months. We also have lots of bottled water. When the stuff goes on sale at Costco we stock up. I also have pack backs in the garage with clothes and emergency gear "just in case" we need to leave the house in a hurry. My wife thinks I'm crazy.

I have a 30 day supply of water and canned food. A dozen cases of vodka, whiskey, red wine. Also have a 3 month supply of MRE's. Small propane stove. More than 10,000 rounds of 12 gauge, 9mm, 45mm rounds. My diesel truck has a 1200 plus mile range if I fill both tanks.

There is very little waste involved which is an important factor. I drink a lot of water so rotating that is easy. The MRE's are about 3 years old and should last another 5 easy. The liquor is an easy slow rotation item.
I try to eat only fresh food so the canned foods are the only real wasteful item. Most have an easy 2 year shelf life but each Thanksgiving I donate to food drives and replace. I've thought about upping the quantity and would if I didn't live in Florida. In the event of a real emergency without power the extreme heat/humidity will quickly shorten the shelf life. Almost forgot ..... I've got lots of dog food too!!! . |

Do you keep enough diesel to fill it though? Petrol stations get emptied overnight when there's any shortage or scare.

Except for running the refrigerator I don't really see the point. I don't have more than a day or two of fresh food anyway. I have candles and an oil lamp for reading. Trying to run the air conditioner would just be a waste. If I'm missing something let me know. |

Seeing that perhaps our most threatening disasters come from Humans these days, it seems to me that there really are no disaster free zones now.
As such, I do keep myself prepared even in my car where I always carry water, first aid, kit, blanket, etc. In my home, the same but 3 months freeze dried foods, water filters and an ass load of ammo! ![]() |

if i recall correctly, they were using the generators in regards to cooking food, but i am not sure where it fit in with that. maybe just powering the fridge that stores the perishable items as you mention.

Remember seeing hours long lines waiting to get a gallon of water just days after hurricanes? In cold climates you could run a space heater though. . |
