I'm not overly knowledgeable about encryption, but I always though AES256 wasn't all that strong? I mean, plenty powerful enough to stop most hackers etc but not enough to stop a big government when they clearly want to break it.

Which is why I think that the encrypted file IS most likely Assange's insurance policy against the CIA. He knows that the government can probably crack the file. That doesn't much matter though, because if the government did crack the file open, the contents would now become an "unveiled threat" to the Government/CIA not to turn on him.

As for the general public, they'd probably never be able to crack the file. They would only see it's contents in the event of Assange's untimely demise.

Yeah, i think its odd that people think the US is his greatest problem. There are tons of regimes that would disappear him for far fewer reasons than the US has.

His biggest problem is most likely not whats been published but what every shady government is afraid could be published in the future. Making large crowds of people afraid for their power and who have unfettered access to unlimited resources and scary people who sneak in the night making people go away isn't a great formula for living a long life.

I expect his lawyers will challenge the arrest warrant in the courts in Britain as soon as he is arrested, this sort of thing can drag through the courts there for months, even a year, so he wont be going to Sweden any time soon. In the meantime he and Wikileaks will be getting a lot of publicity. Will be interesting to see if they dump something really big when he is arrested.
