Shoppers at Walmart will soon have something other than glossy magazines and chewing gum to look at when in the checkout line: A "video message" from the Department of Homeland Security asking them to look out for "suspicious" activity and report it immediately.

It's part of a new Department of Homeland Security program that could see Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's face on video screens in malls, retail outlets and hotels across the United States.

The Walmart video, which will soon be launched at 230 locations nationwide and may eventually be expanded to nearly 600 locations in 27 states, features Napolitano thanking the retailer by name for participating in the program.

Napolitano then says: "If you see something suspicious in the parking lot or in the store, say something immediately. Report suspicious activity to your local police or sheriff. If you need help, ask a Walmart manager for assistance."

The video, which doesn't appear to offer any advice on what constitutes "suspicious" activity, is part of DHS' "If You See Something, Say Something" program. It was launched originally in the New York City public transit system and, according to the DHS, is about to go nationwide.

"In the coming months, the Department will continue to expand the 'If You See Something, Say Something' campaign nationally with public education materials and outreach tools designed to help America's businesses, communities and citizens remain vigilant and play an active role in keeping the country safe," DHS said in a statement.

now, not only are we supposed to live in fear of "the terrorists", but each other as well. Better start worrying about whether or not you "fit in" or the guy next to you might be calling Homeland Security to send their thugs out to arrest you.

this fucking country is doomed.

this has been going on for years and years in one way or another

city subways
report drunk drivers programs
america's most wanted
et al
etc

if you have a tendency to live in fear, this simply reinforces your fear based perspective on life and if you do not have a tendency to live in fear, you go about your life as you always do.

this is designed to bring those who do not live in fear into the fold. Now you have something to fear: Your neighbor who lives in fear and could possibly have you hauled off for no reason.

Interrogations & cavity searches will become commonplace. Just like at the airports. Watch and see.

years ago someone called 911 on me and reported me dui for passing him on a 2 lane highway. several miles down the road a cop pulled me over and informed me of the call. he looked at me and my truck, said "nice truck, have a nice day." and i was on my way.

no biggie.

eh? not sure what you mean "years ago" and "come the fuck on"?

my point is that *neighbors* have been asked to report neighbors now for a long time and i have been reported and my life has not been changed as a result. furthermore, please explain the diabolical reasoning behind the thinking that this is a government plot to squelch freedom for the sake of squelching freedom. fact is, we live in a society with rules. as much as i dislike driving 55mph, we have a speed limit because it is safer for everyone to have a limit. it's not in place to keep people down and remove freedom because *the government* thinks we should not have freedom.

do you really believe the government is out to get you and is doing so by having walmart shoppers report you to the manager?

it's not just Walmart... the shit will be everywhere in no time. Did you not read the title of the OP? I can't imagine why you would be willing to go along with this. If nothing else, you should at least be pissed about the waste of tax dollars.

of course i read the title, i read the article and read several other articles on the topic.

i am not condoning it by bringing up the fact that policies and programs such as this have been around for years and years. i am saying that even though these policies and programs have been around for years and years those of us who choose not to live in fear have no problem doing so. re: tax dollars wasted. stop the wars, that would go a longer way towards stopping wasting tax dollars.

My first thoughts on this were similar - that the UK has had this going on for years.
But what good has it done? A bomb went off in a city centre and everyone was 'on the alert'. A month down the line everyone (apart from the victims and their families) had forgotten and were not checking for 'suspicious packages'. Until the next bomb went off. And so on.

People working in public transport did the 'be alert' course, but they still thought 'it's not going to happen to me' and turned a blind eye to all sorts of suspicious packages. Because any other way would have made transport grind to a halt.
Same with any big meeting place. If you were on the alert constantly it would drive you mad and you'd never go anywhere.

But what has happened is that in the UK (and now it seems the US) the 'threat' of violence is being used to bombard people with 'information' about what they should be looking out for. And to be suspicious of their neighbours.
And that's why the extension of this is wrong. Anywhere.
