"In the coming months, the Department will continue to expand the 'If You See Something, Say Something' campaign nationally with public education materials and outreach tools designed to help America's businesses, communities and citizens remain vigilant and play an active role in keeping the country safe," DHS said in a statement.

years ago someone called 911 on me and reported me dui for passing him on a 2 lane highway. several miles down the road a cop pulled me over and informed me of the call. he looked at me and my truck, said "nice truck, have a nice day." and i was on my way.

my point is that *neighbors* have been asked to report neighbors now for a long time and i have been reported and my life has not been changed as a result. furthermore, please explain the diabolical reasoning behind the thinking that this is a government plot to squelch freedom for the sake of squelching freedom. fact is, we live in a society with rules. as much as i dislike driving 55mph, we have a speed limit because it is safer for everyone to have a limit. it's not in place to keep people down and remove freedom because *the government* thinks we should not have freedom.

of course i read the title, i read the article and read several other articles on the topic.

i am not condoning it by bringing up the fact that policies and programs such as this have been around for years and years. i am saying that even though these policies and programs have been around for years and years those of us who choose not to live in fear have no problem doing so. re: tax dollars wasted. stop the wars, that would go a longer way towards stopping wasting tax dollars.

My first thoughts on this were similar - that the UK has had this going on for years.
But what good has it done? A bomb went off in a city centre and everyone was 'on the alert'. A month down the line everyone (apart from the victims and their families) had forgotten and were not checking for 'suspicious packages'. Until the next bomb went off. And so on.

People working in public transport did the 'be alert' course, but they still thought 'it's not going to happen to me' and turned a blind eye to all sorts of suspicious packages. Because any other way would have made transport grind to a halt.
Same with any big meeting place. If you were on the alert constantly it would drive you mad and you'd never go anywhere.

But what has happened is that in the UK (and now it seems the US) the 'threat' of violence is being used to bombard people with 'information' about what they should be looking out for. And to be suspicious of their neighbours.
And that's why the extension of this is wrong. Anywhere.
