What the hell is up with Australia right now?

Seriously, like, holy shit mon.

I know it's been going on for a week or more already but this just in today:

Australia's Queensland flood crisis escalates, 9 dead, 66 missing
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english201...c_13685702.htm

Many evacuate Brisbane ahead of floods
http://www.winnipegsun.com/news/worl.../16838256.html

Thousands of Brisbane homes at risk of flooding
http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loc...ub=CalgaryHome

It's being reported on local news channels here that they got 150 mm of rain in half an hour

Quote:
The flooding was driven by a powerful freak storm that dropped an estimated 150 millimetres of rain in just 30 minutes, turning a normally small stream into a raging torrent.

It hit Toowoomba, just west of Brisbane, with little or no warning.

In addition to the 10 already confirmed dead -- five of them children -- authorities have grave concerns for at least 18 of those missing.

In total, 20 people have now been killed in ongoing flooding in Queensland in recent weeks.

Shoutout to all our Aussie wm's, here's hoping you're all safe. I know several here are from Brisbane.

I realize this may have already been posted about but this latest massive crisis just happened overnight last night.

I may have to start my donations for 2011 early this year.

Saw that this morning. I have family that live in Adelaide, but my uncle heads up to that region this time of year for work he does, hopefully he wasn't around there. The footage I just saw sure didn't look good.

Best wishes to everyone in that area.

Earthquakes, wildfires and floods of Biblical proportions.

35 years. So it's actually pretty common

Australia's flood is unfortunate. This is said to be the toughest local threat in 35 years. Annoying local weather is one of the local factors that could connect all local people in a fight to survive (even though they may not even know each other).

Joe Sixpack lives in one of the affected areas. Actually, a large proportion of adult webmasters in Australia are from QLD. We're a touch south of most of it so it's not really affecting us although towns inland and south of us are copping it. My sister who is OS atm will probably have the bottom floor of her unit flooded though. They're saying worse than '74 but who knows with the media hyperbole...

150 mm is a lot of rain that fast. When I briefly lived in rural GA in the mid 90s Tropical Storm Alberto dumped 21.1 inches (536 mm) of rain on Americus in a 24 hour period. Fortunately the town is on a small hill so the town was okay but every road in and out of town was washed out.

I'm a fair way from the Queensland floods - but it's raining like fury here as well. No floods here atm but we had them before Christmas. My town is flood proofed with huge levee banks following the last floods we had. I feel so sorry for those poor bastards up there. The place is fucked!

And I read just now that because all the coal mines there are flooded, there's likely to be no power generated soon.

This flood thing has come after a year of just about non-stop rain which was preceded bu ten or so years of drought, when it wouldn't rain.

Ahh Australia - beautiful one day, underwater the next!

We have had flooding here since Xmas, Our town of around 50K has No Milk/Bread and other supplies left. Fuel is running low, isn't good at all. Though Brissie and Ipswitch is worse there expecting over 20K homes to go under there.

Oh, the irony...

No water when you need it, and when it finally comes it's damaging and of such epic proportion that you cannot hope to store it for the future.

I'm in the middle of Brisbane, but luckily on high ground. Spent most of the day without power, and down sandbagging and helping out where I can. Got a few friends whose houses are already totally under water, its pretty major here. Good thing is most people are happy to pitch in and help out where its needed, but gonna be one hell of a cleanup job..

Yes I love these. Every few years it floods in this area, and we just ring up and claim our $1000. Please donate now, all us wealthy middle class folk need your support! (I don't tell any lies to the opporator, so I'm not scamming, I really was stranded for more than 48 hours)

My sister who is OS atm will probably have the bottom floor of her unit flooded though. They're saying worse than '74 but who knows with the media hyperbole...

Thanks to you and the others for the updates.

This is today's news about this disaster:

This current flood is only 45 minutes drive from my place and I am in LA. It's very stressful to be away from the family when all this is going on so on the phone with them alot

Australian City a Stinking Mess
http://www.winnipegsun.com/news/worl.../16868541.html

"The Queensland floods, which started in December, have killed 20 people, left 53 missing and affected an area the size of South Africa. A total of 86 towns have been impacted."

"The massive flood which hit Brisbane was contaminated with sewage which spilled from damaged treatment plants upstream on the Brisbane River."

Yup, next comes the pestilence.

That's some serious situation down there.
