I really like Peter Sunde post about Facebook:

Facebook has become the event planning system. It?s the place where you have all your friends (and other people) somewhat sorted and organized. All in all, it?s the organized system in the chaos that is otherwise known as the internets.

This is leading Facebook towards a virtual monopoly. There are lots of issues with monopolies, but one of the more interesting ones when it comes to Facebook is the impact is has on our social lives, online as well as offline.

A friend of mine creates music videos. He?s great at it. He is also very proud of them, so he uploads them to Facebook to show his friends and relatives. It?s the easy way to do it ? all of us are already there.
Facebook however doesn?t like this behaviour. They deleted the videos and said that my friend was violating copyright. Even though they really have no clue if that is the case or not.

Both my friend and I are very into people being treated as they should. We don?t take crap from anyone. That?s why my friend wanted to get even with Facebook, in a sort of childish way. He uploaded a picture of a male genitalia as a profile picture. Harmless enough. Friends seeing his profile picture would laugh or become a bit annoyed that they have a childish friend.

Author of article probably should have read The Facebook Effect, where company insiders are pretty much quoted saying some of these things. He wouldn't have written an inaccurate opinion piece.

I like how they discuss the lack of privacy and Facebook's tracking of users through the "Like" & similar plugins, then follow it up with a Facebook like button.

Me too. Never had had one. Hopefully never will.

Am I concerned about privacy? NO... I couldn't give a fuck who knows where I go online. Nothing to hide at all... I simply manage perfectly well without one

Can't stand it. I read some of the shit people talk on my girlfriends account, and it just pisses me off. People i know talking absolute piss, attention seeking, and basically just giving updates on what they are doing, as if anyone actually cares.

You can't go on a night out now without assholes taking cameras so they can run home and post the pics on FB. It's like the highlight of their night.

Hate it.

Will always hate it...

It's interesting how when the topic of Facebook comes up someone always has to declare that they are glad that they don't "Facebook".

Also, giving examples of the typical actions of "bottom feeders" on a social networking site only shows that you have a one-dimensional view of what that site is all about.

It's like someone saying that they are glad that they don't have a GFY account because of <insert random criticism here>.

To assume that everyone on Facebook fits a particular cookie-cutter persona is quite arrogant actually. If you don't have an account, then...

That blog post is as shallow as a kiddie pool at Disneyland.

Facebook, Youtube, Vimeo, Break and other sites all perform take downs of videos that have complete or partial soundtracks and/or other content that is copyrighted.

And putting up a dick pic as a profile picture is retarded. A profile pic on Facebook is one of the few things that is always public. Anyone who inadvertently searches a name that is similar to the friend of that guy or is even a friend of a friend would be greeted by that adult picture.

Seriously now...

I'd never say everyone was the same on it. But having 1 or 2 on my "friends" list talking the same shit all the time would just piss me off.

Hence the reason i'm better off without it...

That valuation is based on partial investments which are often made for reasons other than to receive a direct ROI. It could be to make inroads into advertising or search early on...or to be "the first guys in" . We will know what its really worth when its either aquired (not gunnu happen) or when it goes public and we can see the stock price after a month or so when it settles down from all the initial crazieness.

Its is with out a doubt in the mid to 11 figures....

25% of ALL internet pagviews in the US last month were on FB...thats just scary.

I have too many mainstream sites to not have a FB account. These days it seems if you don't your biz on facebook, you're not a trusted company.
