Less searched for, less competition usually, not always though. 100-200k is mid size I'd say if you go by [exact] searches. This should not be something that you spend too much time worrying about though. Go with a niche you like your self and the traffic and long-tails will come with good content and links.

Exactly. You'll find a lot of terms are dominated by India users and so forth. I generally do individual runs for "Exact" searches on top tier converting countries and tally them up to get an idea where they might fall into place competitively. If you're looking at 100k+ plus across us/ca/uk you're probably getting into some competitive terms that will send you decent traffic. If you can rank that is. Don't trust the numbers with your life though, I've got a #3 spot right now that the tool claims to get 9,900 exacts globally per month, which sends me over 1k US hits a day alone from Google before the long term and alternative phrases even factor in. It's a good for gauging terms against each other, but nowhere near accurate. I've seen it go both ways many times. If I can get an exact matching .com/.org/.net for a term that estimates 10k monthly plus on us/ca/uk, with a term I think I can sell on, I'll take it simply because it's going to be easy traffic even with a minisite slapped together in a couple hours and minimal backlinking...
