![]() I noticed posters at LV airport from Lawyers who claim to be able to get tax back for Canadians who have won whilst in Vegas.
Our of interest, how much tax is payable, and can such lawyers get the tax back? |

Whatever you do, don't use a place that charges you a percentage of what they get back for you. You should be able to find an accountant that charges about $100 to file a US return.
You need a us TIN. Taxpay id number, then you file a return, with the paper the casino gave you that shows how much they withheld, and you have to claim gambling losses for a greater amount in order to get your money back. The % is 30% the accountant should be able to get you whatever back you have in gambling losses up to the 30%

What Mike said, plus you can ONLY get this money back the following year when you file your personal tax return. You'll need either to keep all your ATM/CC receipts or download all the win/loss statements from the casinos where you gambled and then ask for the money withheld to offset greater losses from gambling. Unless we're talking serious money (like over 5k at least, imo) I'd save yourself the trouble.

So if a Canadian wins say $10k, only $7k is paid?
About ten years ago my wife won big on the slots. Being an Israeli citizen, she was told she would need to pay tax. We then said I had played, and being an EU citizen there no tax payable... |
