I was working with a flaky satellite dish, and had pulled the launch up to watch while working with another part of the system.
Spent a good part of the rest of the day watching raw news feeds, and the reactions of news people. Tom Brokaw weeping for the death of his friend. Dan Rather pissed about someone off camera making noise. The look on Christina McAuliffe's parents faces as they thought it was all part of the show, then the realization that something was very wrong. A very sad day.

I was in school, living in FL. The teachers took us out into the playground to watch the shuttle go up. I remember one teacher that stayed inside to watch on TV sticking her head out and saying, "Oh my god, bring them back in, quick."

Teachers were especially gung ho for the launch since it was "the first teacher in space". They were completely destroyed, I was in kindergarten.. we were too young to understand what was happening. I remember on the ride home from school looking for space shuttle parts out the window.

I still remember that day. I was sitting in a waiting area of an automotive glass repair shop waiting for a cracked wind shield to be replaced. They had a TV on in the waiting room. It was surreal.

I was watching the launch live on TV when it happened. A huge fan of the space program, I watched nearly every launch. It's hard to describe the feeling I had when I realized what had happened. It was a very sad day indeed. A reminder that nothing about space travel is routine.

I was in electronics class in high school.

Someone brought in an old TV set and we were trying to figure out what it's problem was. We had several old sets and figured out it needed a tube replaced. We found one in an old set and got it working.

The Challenger was just leaving the launch pad and our teacher was a space fanatic so he suggested we leave it on. We were just about to get back to our seats when it blew up and he instantly knew what had happened. He just sat there stunned looking at the TV. After about a minute of silence he turned off the set and went to the back room to cry I guess...

He worked for JPL so perhaps he was a bit connected to the whole thing.

We turned the TV back on and put it real low and watched the news anchors get all agro.

I was working on a high rise doing construction down in Naples on the gulf coast of FL. It was a cool, crisp day with a deep blue sky that made the visibility perfect. I can't remember if it was break time or lunch but we headed to the east side of the building to ride the buck hoist down to the ground. Even though Naples is over 200 miles from the cape on a clear day you can still see the shuttle launch. Being up high on the condo also helped.

So a friend and I were waiting for the hoist and we could clearly see the contrail had split in two and I said " That can't be good ". Made it to my car and put on the radio and heard the news.It was the first time in my life that I felt the USA wasn't perfect.
