Radiohed not giving away their new album

When Radiohead released their last album they put it up on their site and you could download it for free or, if you wanted, pay them whatever you felt it was worth. Supposedly they made more money doing it that way than they would have with a normal release and record company royalties.

They announced today that they are putting their new album on pre-sale this Saturday. You can buy an MP3 version for $9 and a WAV version for $14.

I wonder why the change of heart?

Here is the story

They obviously did not make as much money as was said before. people are cheap and won't pay unless they have to.

It isn't about always giving away -everything- for free. It's about using a -free- giveaway to increase exposure and gain fans to help increase future sales.

Gideongallery's recent Neil Gaiman video highlights this.
