2. Must be HD

Best bet at that price range would probably be one of the newer DSLR cameras that will shoot video as well.

Nice on the price. Wasn't aware they had something priced like that, but I see it's a consumer model camera.

I see some video here from some lower end Nikon (d7000) and Canon (t3i/60D) dSLRs that looks amazing. Considering they are similarly priced and would allow for swapping out of lenses...what would the benefit of choosing the HV40 over one of the other two I mentioned?

yes and when you add camera mounts, off board audio and more than triple the production time you are well over 2K

Disregarding price now, as I'm in the market myself and the $2k price point isn't an issue.

I just don't want another consumer model video cam. I purchased a Sony about 2 years ago and have never been happy with the quality of the video. It just didn't ever seem to be proper HD, which I just wrote off as it being a consumer model put sold to suckers just looking for the HD buzzword.

I have a Canon 50D and a nice collection of lenses, and being that I want a new video cam I have been leaning towards picking up a second body capable of shooting video. Probably making the jump to a full frame model.

Any recommendations? Off board audio I was aware would be an added cost, but I do have that end covered already.

Lights are more important, spend $1000 on camera & $1000 + on lighting. Can't go wrong with Canon.

But im seriously thinking about swapping over to HMI to use for both, Arri make the best HMI kit but its at a price. $34,000 will set you up with a modest HMI set up with Arri

You can get a lot cheaper lights like Alien Bees, but i doubt they would take the beating my Pro Photo lights get when i fly to and from Argentina, Prague and the UK with them. If you dont intend to travel with your kit go for the less expensive set up. After all you can pay $50,000 for lighting kit but if you dont know how to light you are throwing your money down the drain.

A good photographer can use a cheap set up and produce amazing results if he knows what he's doing !

Has anyone shot video with the 7d? I want to pickup a midrange Dslr that shoots hd video but have no clue which direction to go in.

I just picked up a 60D for Christmas and it's amazing quality and does great in low light.

BUT I'm keeping my Canon HV20 because it has auto focus! The 60D is great and all, but it does NOT have autofocus during video mode. So unless you're staying on a pretty even plane and/or don't mind the sliding in and out of focus that "film" gives you, you may not get the finished result you want.

The flip out screen on the back is fucking brilliant, I have to say.

Just food for thought.
