So what would you do?

I got tires changed on my car. Went on highway after that and the mechanic did not screw in the bolts on front left tire properly. Cars got shaking a bit at first and than violently while making terrible sound. I barely made it to the side. I check the tire, 2 bolts unscreved completely, one was unscrewed by half and one was still holding, but also not in completely. Probably 100 meters more and I would loose a tire.

What the fuck would you do to the guy? I almost got killed due to the guys neglegence.

Did you go immediately on to the highway after getting the tires changed or did you drive a little around town before hand?

What's important right now is having any/all damages properly repaired. Ask for the manager, be polite, be calm, let him know how concerned you are, give him a chance to make everything right.

I drove around than went on highway. It did not happen immediately, but it was the same day, no stops being made after going from the shop.

The reason why I ask is because here where I live (British Columbia, Canada) you actually have to bring the car back to have the lug nuts re torqued after I think 50km. It says so specifically in the purchase agreement. Failure to do so results in them washing their hands of any problems that happen after.

What I would do is go in with a level head, be polite and firmly ask them to make this right. What I wouldn't do is make comments about what "could have happened". I think this will set the wrong tone right off the bat. In reality you're not going to be able to "punish" the mechanic, who most probably didn't do it on purpose, and the best you can hope for is to have everything fixed up with as little fuss as possible.

Anyways that's a pretty shitty situation and I hope they clear it up for you.

It happened to me in London 25 years back. Only in my case the wheel came off completely. I got the police involved as i could have easily killed someone. If memory serves the mechanic got fired and the garage had to repair damages to my car. The police filed charges of criminal negligence, but i dont know what the outcome was. One thing i do remember is it scared the crap out of me

I would have had the car towed back to the garage that moment.

The problem is proof now.

He could easily say it was fine when it left and if it happened why leave it so long.

Lug nuts need retightening anywhere from 50-100kms of travel, unless it's city driving, then you should retighten sooner.

What happens is the metal sometimes gets subjected to differences in air temperature, causing expansion and in some cases contraction. Once outside again the air temperaturte changes. The heat from brakes and motor speed that up and if air is cooler outside it can loosen faster.

Most service receipts will tell you to bring it in for retightening. I've had it happen twice. Once after break work and once after we went mudding with a Firefly lol the mudhole was cold, the air was hot.

Whenever your lug nuts have to come off always check them before hitting any highways. Turn wheel all the way to right, check nuts, ten turn all the way to left and check again. The slight movement of vehicle side to side will show loosened nuts on any wheel. Front or back.

They didn"t do anything wrong. This happens. If it was neglect you'd get the grinding noise when you took your first turn.

Absolutely correct, all non-steel wheels should should be re-tourked.
