accidentaly used my business card for a personal purchase

I pulled out the wrong card and bought a pizza for $13.99 using my business card. I know you're not supposed to mix personal and business expenses. What should I do? Forget about it? Put the money back in the business account?

Get the fuck over it.

I have a bad habit of putting my business checks into my personal account. They are at the same bank and the bank just cashes them and never asks questions. I think that's pretty much standard with banks these days - they know they can trace everything and reverse money if need be.

I just keep my business card in a money pouch where I store the checks, and that was the end of that problem.

I wouldn't worry about it.

A new report from the United States Postal Service Inspector General finds that U.S. postal employees have been using their USPS credit cards for private travel and personal expenses.

One worker used his card to make more than 50 purchases at "adult entertainment establishments." Another bought an Apple computer and paid his mortgage. A group of employees flew their families and friends to Spain and Italy.

Overall, the report finds that the USPS lost $600,000 on unauthorized employee expenses.

This from an agency that lost $8.5 billion in the 2010 fiscal year. The USPS said this week that it expects to default on its financial obligations by the end of this year unless Congress changes a law requiring it to put more than $5.4 billion towards retiree benefits annually.

There's a big problem with that. Once you deposit business checks into your personal account then the IRS will think that ALL deposits into your personal account are for business purposes. It is then YOUR responsibility to prove otherwise.

To those who make this mistake. Make a record of your mishap and put it in your tax filing for future proof (then cross your fingers you never get audited).

Fix the error

You write a check from your personal account to payment for the business account credit card for the exact amount.
That's what you have to do if you worked for a mainstream company. Unless the company is a bunch of jerks, no problem. They know employees accidentally do that. It's so common.
If you're working at a jerk company. You might be in big trouble. I worked at a place where 5 supervisors individually gave me grief after accidentally calling 911. Fucking 1 button on the phone always stuck.

This is my own company, so no boss or anything to report to. Just accidentally pulled out the wrong card (they're both blue), and didn't realize it until she handed the card back to me.

You have lots of choices:

1. Submit the lunch as a business expense, even if you ate alone.

Or

2. Pay back your company by making a $13.99 payment to your business credit card. Give yourself a receipt from your company that you paid back the loan. Then go 1 step further and deduct this as an expense for your business.

or

3. Just give the bill to your account and let him or her work it out. It's not like it will make any big difference anyway.

Did you tell the person you were with what you do? Talk about business at all?

Did you wipe your nose with a restuarant-provided napkin while thinking about work?

If so, it was a business lunch.;

what kind of business is it? is it your business? if so it doesn't matter much. you can 'correct' the issue as some have suggested, but the IRS won't be repelling into your windows for it. if it's someone you work for, they can easily write it off as a business meal if you explain it to 'em

....just saw you mentioned it was your own company. as far as the tax man is concerned, you and the biz are one in the same. you're clear

A fucking pizza? Wow - anal much? Whoops! Wrong question to ask on a porn board.

You only need to show receipts for expenses above a certain amount. $60 I think it is.

Fuck it, do like Shemp said: business lunch.

Yeah, it's my own business for my online stuff. I was doing it as a "hobby" on prior years but now that I'm making more I set up an LLC last year, and this was the first food purchase... didn't really mean to use that card.

just book it as a personal expense, and reimburse your company with the same amount. However, don't add the reimbursement to your turnover. And also don't include the amount in your company's costs.

You are worried about a pizza? LOL

Dude, come sit through an audit with me.

IRS: So... you do what with cars?
Me: Not cars. Trannies... you know, transsexuals.
IRS: < awkward pause >
IRS: I see.
IRS: Well, you have a lot of unusual deductions.

I almost do this all the time. I have two different company cards and a personal card that are all the same color. I say write it off or write a check to your biz for the pizza.

This reminds me of a discussion I had with my CPA a few years ago. He said, it?s ok to buy a plasma TV for the business and have it at home. I can write off the plasma TV but it becomes a gray area if I charge the business storage for having it in my house.
