you let the kids on it? I had a perfectly working laptop for about a year and a half but a month after my niece and nephew moved in with me the thing was full of viruses, had to be reformatted a handful of times and even the screen was starting to crack on me!

Ever since I have switched to toshiba i haven't had any issues, i've gone through 2 now and both are solid structured. Only reason i got the new one was for upgrade purposes.

...oh and my sister and the kids have since moved out so I'm sure that helped! ;)

I switched to mac for the same reason.

No virus, no slowing down, excellent battery lifetime

Downside is by now a normal PC laptop would have been crashing on me and I could have gone out and picked up the new macbook air

for my main work computer...no one is allowed on it at all.

we have others in the house...and yeah they are always messed with viruses
my kid is only 17 months, so all he does is smash the keyboard
even when people have their own accounts on your system, and you keep them out of your side...they will mess up your comps..lol

With a laptop you never want to rely on the stock cooling unless you know it is excellent. Always get some sort of cooling pad with a fan and use it when ever it is possible.

I used to use HP as well. Only thing was if ANYTHING went wrong on them it was all down hill. Switched to Dell and have not had an issue since. Then the only thing is keeping up with the new technology. This one is 8gigs of ram on win 64bit and runs very well. But some of the programs I use are processor hogs sooooo.. even though its just over a year old, time to get the latest and greatest.

HP sucks. Some of the DV series laptops are the subject of a class-action lawsuit because of quality issues.

If you live by the numbers, the most reliable laptops are (in order) Asus, Toshiba, Sony and Apple. The least reliable is HP.

Seriously, try this:

You have nothing to lose, do it just for kicks. If it works again, you can give it to the kids or use it as a backup laptop. Better than throwing it out.

And don't bake the thing. It's a temporary fix. If it's under warranty, send it back. If not, find a good local repair shop. Any shop that does laptop repair has seen a shitload of these. If it's the no video issue that has plagued these things then it will be in the $100-$150 range to fix.

Get a Dell. I'm on my second laptop since 2004. Both been Dells and loved them both. Current one I have had over 2.5 years now, still flying, still in great condition, I love it.

My girlfriend has the same one but 13 inch screen, she has had hers 3 years and same story, not a single problem with it and she uses hers every single day for 6+ hours per day.

I don't understand people that are serious about (online) business and use a Windows pc. Get a MacBook already and you'll never have problems again and you can focus on work instead of waiting your Windows to boot or fixing problems...

Seriously, just try it, it will be the best laptop choise you ever made.

it's true. the only downside of buying a mac is you don't upgrade as often because it never breaks down.

This is the same stupid answer any mac user would say. 90% of the time when a PC has an issue it is a user malfunction. Has nothing to do with the machine. MACs are idiot proof. Congratulations to the idiots. I have been using a PC for years. I never have issues. As far as hardware is concerned. Everyone knows that the last batch of MAC laptops all had battery issues. Every single person I know who has one had to replace the battery after a year. Yea, thats quality.

The funny part is, before even opening this thread. I knew there would be a MACer in here giving the exact same post you did.

I'm not an Aplle fanboy at all, I don't have an iPhone or iPad. All I care about is optimizing my business as much as possible and a MacBook for laptop and BlackBerry for phone is just the best setup. People can argue what they want, but it's a simple fact. Anyone that has used these devices knows what I'm talking about. Anyone that disagrees has not worked with these devices or is not serious about optimizing their business and how they work.

As mentioned it's only a temp fix, what is does is fixes some of the lose solder joints on the mobo. Within a month or so you will have the same problem again, if your happy to do it on a regular basis then ya go for it.

And it doesn't always work.....

I use Mac and have 3 of them. Zero issues since i switched 7 years ago. No crashes no down time what so ever.

Im not going to tell you to switch, im just sharing my experiences. Fuck it, get another PC, the next one may be the one.

I think Mac people get all "priechi" about Macs is because they had such bad PC experiences, switch to Mac and are so happy with the zero issues all Macs have in comparison to PC's.

I will be the 1st one to admit that Mac people as a whole are pretty fucking weird people, but what can i saw, they do make extremely good products.

All HP Pavilions have a design flaw with the heat-sink on the motherboard. It means that the GPU will often melt and fry your laptop due to the heat problem.

There was (is?) also a class-action lawsuit regarding this.

It is a good idea to remove any dust from the fan annually with compressed air. Just from the outside. It is not an easy operation to get access to the fan from the inside on these laptops because you need to remove the motherboard too.

ALWAYS have a fully bootable image of your system disk (C drive) on another drive ....

If for whatever reason shit goes south (viruses, hardware failure, theft, whatever ..) you can be back up and running in the time it takes you to boot from the remote drive connected to another machine ...

It took me 4 times losing everything to realize this ...

120 GB SATA drive - $50
my time making a bootable system drive -$50 (one hour)
USB/SATA/PATA connector - $15

Being back online 15 minutes after disaster strikes - PRICELESS!!

I found out about this the hard way: had HP Pavilion for 2 years running very good, no complains, didn't get why others hated them. Then I decided to run second monitor with it and at first I hooked it up with regular VGA cable - it run smooth, again no complains. Then I decided to hook it up with HDMI, it'd run okay for a month or two, then something happened, computer was running hotter and at some point GPU broke so that nVidia drivers would not work and therefor no additional monitor, luckily for me standard vga drivers worked so at least I could use built in display for a time being while getting new computer.

I took it all apart, figuring maybe heat-sink and fans inside got too dusty. It is a pain to get to heatsink on HP - you have to take it all apart including top display piece as well. Eventually when I got to the heatsink I learned that CPU and GPU share one heatsink, which would not be a problem IF the heatsink would be pressing firmly against GPU as it was over CPU. There was 2-3mm space between the sink and graphics chip with some filler material which I guess didn't take heat away as well as firmly attached heatsink with thermal paste in between. HDMI made GPU heat much more to a point of it burning some circuitry inside. Surprising that video card would continue work at least on standart SVGA drivers and native display, although would not play movies well any longer - it would overheat instantly and shut itself down.

Won't be buying HPs anymore after that experience.

There was (is?) also a class-action lawsuit regarding this.

I had problems with HP too and I switched to SONY 18 months ago.

Laptop: SONY VAIO VPCEB15FH (15" screen with a keyboard including a numpad).
Desktop: SONY VAIO VCG-LV27VJ (All in one with a 24" screen).

GREAT and reliable machines

Sorry to hear that.

I was lucky and saved mine before the disaster occurred, or maybe I just postponed it.

The notebook would always get very warm in the upper left corner, close to the power button, especially after playing videos in fullscreen for some time. The fan would spin a lot, and the computer would become slow.

The solution for me was to remove all the dust which had accumulated inside the fan. Like you say, it was a pain to reach those areas of the machine. If someone likes doing puzzles then go for it

I didn't have the nerves to experiment with thermal paste or baking the chip.
After having removed all the dust from all the components the laptop has become usable and silent again.

I am not looking forward to next time it needs cleaning. It should probably be done before summer when heating problems usually arise.

And indeed, it doesn't always work. But if the only other option is chucking it in the bin: what have you got to lose? That's right: nothing.

As I said if you have the time and nothing to lose go for it..... But for the average user who doesn't know much about computers reflowing a Mobo is a big step.

But I guess you did it so go figure...

Every single person I know who has one had to replace the battery after a year. Yea, thats quality.

The funny part is, before even opening this thread. I knew there would be a MACer in here giving the exact same post you did.
my old laptops wasn't really useful after a year so only having to replace the battery is a good deal

As mentioned. When PCs become slow and unusable. It is the users fault. Not the hardwares fault. It is true most people have no idea what they are doing when it comes to actually using a computer. MACs are no different. My girlfriend has an iMAC. She downloaded all sorts of programs. AOL Desktop, Limewire. etc. It worked like shit until I got rid of all the garbage. A lot of people also want to buy $500-750 dollar laptops to do a lot of work on. If you have 2-3GB of memory and a dual core processors these days, there is only such much you can get out of it. The true different between a MAC and a PC is the operating system. If you think there is any different, you just don't know any better. Yes, ofcourse it is easier to stay virus free on a MAC, because why the fuck would someone who makes a virus make it for a MAC, when there are so many more PCs users. But if you have a good anti-virus and are not to cheap to pay the $30-35 dollars a year for a good anti-virus. It is your own fault. If when you install a piece of software on a windows machine and think it is ok to click through the install, not removing all of the toolbar installs that it comes with. So your IE has 7 tool bars. You shouldn't be using a computer. It is as simple as that. Everyone I know who has a MAC instead of a PC and they dont do graphics or video, this is the reason why they have it. Because they have no idea what they are doing, and think the same thing you do. That MAC is some kind of miracle computer. Keep Dreaming

Switched to a Macbook in 2006 after my Sony Vaio crapped out on me.

Since then, I've taken it to play shows with (I make music), spilled various drinks on it, took it with me for a ~8,000 mile trip across Canada and States, been using it it as a main workstation for programming/development for almost 5 years now.

The "Mac users are dumb" is a retarded excuse. I never used a Mac till 2006 and I was pretty smart with a university degree in computer science and everything. I guess I got dumber with experience.

Oh yeah, the Mac OS was originally based on Unix. Not the bloated POS that became Windows. It still has a native terminal with shell by default.

And the new Macbook pro lineup just came out this Thursday. It smokes previous Mac lineups.

If you're getting a laptop, go get a Macbook pro, it'll last you a while. Check the 2011 Macbook pro benchmarks on the net.

Sandy Bridge i7 + Thunderbolt. Top of the line stuff. Get an aftermarket SSD into that and it'll be flying.
