Depending on the kind of person you are that sentence could be at once shocking, saddening or darkly comical. However you might feel though, it?s the plain truth, says Kevin Bales.

The modern-day slavery expert explained to CNN that the current $90 rate for a human slave is actually at an historic low. Two hundred years ago, a slave cost about $40,000 in today?s money. The reason for this price slide: a massive boom in the world?s population, especially in developing countries, has increased the supply of ?slaveable? people.

And this has basically turned a human being into a cheap commodity ? Bales says like a Styrofoam cup that?s cheaply replaceable if damaged, ?If they get sick, what?s the point of paying for medicine ? it?s cheaper to let them die and acquire a new one than it is to help the ones you?ve got.

At this very moment, between 12 million and 30 million slaves are working around the world. That?s according to low and high estimates from sociologists and the International Labor Organization.

Despite the spread, any way you cut that number, it?s still a figure that?s big beyond belief. And slaves are everywhere says the United Nations. Breaking down the numbers, more than half of all forced labor sadly occurs right here in Asia. The regions of Latin America and the Middle East both have about 10% of the world?s forced labor. Sub-Saharan Africa has just more than 5%.

And which industries are these slaves in? Well the ones you might expect of course ?- prostitution and sweatshop manufacturing. But they also occur in industries you might not associate with slavery ? coffee and tea trades, food processing and even health care. That takeaway you might be tucking into could also use forced labor.

And one question we might want to consider as we go about our daily lives: Have the hands of a slave touched what I?m touching now? If the numbers above are to be believed, then it?s not far-fetched to think the answer just might be yes.

You can't. It's bullshit. There may be places like Haiti where desperately poor people will rent out their relatives for what seems like a paltry sum, and there may be surprisingly diverse duties can be performed by your hired help, but this is in no way the same as slavery.

There is nowhere where you can buy a live-in maid for any amount as mentioned in the OP's article. You might be able to strike that bargain with some scammer, sure,

1) but will you have a title deed for that person? no
2) if that person decides to leave can you call the police and have your property returned to you? no
3) can you do whatever you want to that person with no legal problems or reprisals? well, maybe if you bribe the right people you might be able to, but that's not slavery it's just old fashioned corruption.

Easy to buy either labor or sex slaves on this side of the world. I wouldn't buy one, but getting one is not as difficult as you'd think, especially if you get them young from their parents. You'd be surprised what a dirt poor family living in Laos will give up to make sure the rest of the family has food for a week.

You don't have someone beating or raping you when you get out of line, and you're probably not locked in a room or a basement every night so you can't escape. Here in Philippines a full time "slave" (maid) is 6-10k PHP a month. That's $90-200. Full time is 24/7 (most get 1 or 2 offdays a month). Every condo has a "slave" room built in. It's standard here to have one. She cooks, cleans, does the laundry, shopping, takes care of errands, dishes, etc.

I am sure that if you could get them in the US for that price everyone would get one as well.

You're so wrong it isn't even funny. Here in Argentina there are organizations bringing people from Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and even poor people from distant provinces and they're bound to slavery. Proper, real slavery in all the sense of the word, hidden in sweat shops, abused and even killed at will.

There's not a single week with police not cracking on one of those slavery dungeons, and the people in charge are just middlemen that go to jail... and someone else sets another slavery operation, sometimes a couple blocks away from the original one. And we're talking about a country where slavery is severely condemned, let alone countries where police and government don't care at all

And what is crazy about that is, they will ship their kids off and then hire girls (some as young as 14) from Laos to come help them pick rice, because Lao workers will work much cheaper than the Thais will. OK look, where I live you can drive to Haiti in about an hour.

I hear this whining all the time. But what you and others are describing is not slavery, it's one or a mix of any of the following:

kidnapping
false imprisonment
prostitution
corruption
organized crime
doing unsavory jobs for very little money

While many of these things are horrible and illegal and others are unfortunate and lamentable, none of them are slavery.
