Workers evacuate stricken nuclear plant
Setback as Japan struggles to contain spiraling nuclear crisis

FUKUSHIMA, Japan ? Workers at a quake-damaged atomic power plant suspended operations and evacuated Wednesday after a surge in radiation made it too dangerous to remain there, dealing a setback to Japan?s frantic efforts to stem a nuclear crisis.

"All the workers there have suspended their operations. We have urged them to evacuate, and they have," Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano said, according to a translation by NHK television.

Edano said that a surge in radiation Wednesday meant workers were unable to continue even minimal efforts at the stricken nuclear plant.

Edano said that a surge in radiation Wednesday morning meant workers were unable to continue even minimal efforts at the stricken nuclear plant.

About 45 minutes later, though, radiation levels near the plant came back down, he said. It's possible that evaporation from reactor No. 3 may have caused the temporary surge, Edano said, although that can't be immediately confirmed. The cabinet secretary added that there was no need to broaden the overall evacuation radius around the nuclear complex.

The truth is they've been lieing from the start. Apart from the (now) impending meltdowns, each one of those explosions blew thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of spent plutonium/uranium rods thousands of feet into the air. They knew it. Spent rods on fire are HIGHLY reactive. 1 micron can kill you.

No need for details... Amp already summed it up: Game Over.

Believe it or not that most likely is because of the amount of concrete needed and no way to get it to the location.

It will be in the hundred ton range.

This is going to make Chernobyl look like mothers milk.

Chernobyl Radiation Cloud:
Wow, that looks bad.

But how many people died at Chernobyl? Less than a thousand? Here's a quote for you:

Quote:
In the aftermath of the accident, 237 people suffered from acute radiation sickness, of whom 31 died within the first three months. Most of these were fire and rescue workers trying to bring the accident under control, who were not fully aware of how dangerous exposure to the radiation in the smoke was. Whereas, the World Health Organization's report 2006 Report of the Chernobyl Forum Expert Group from the 237 emergency workers who were diagnosed with ARS, ARS was identified as the cause of death for 28 of these people within the first few months after the disaster. There were no further deaths identified, in the general population affected by the disaster, as being caused by ARS. Of the 72,000 Russian Emergency Workers being studied, 216 non-cancer deaths are attributed to the disaster, between 1991 and 1998. The latency period for solid cancers caused by excess radiation exposure is 10 or more years; thus at the time of the WHO report being undertaken, the rates of solid cancer deaths were no greater than the general population. Some 135,000 people were evacuated from the area, including 50,000 from Pripyat.
And what makes what's happening in Japan any worse than what happened in Chernobyl?

Don't get me wrong, this is a disaster no matter how you spin it. And I'm sure that tens of thousands were affected by Chernobyl. But it's not the end of the world, and not the end of Japan.
