You should go and play rugby in South Africa now that was fun when I played for our school team back in the early 80s over there. Some of the pitches we played on consisted of dirt and stone with the odd patch of grass here and there.

I don't think North America has any like that though?

Niagara on the lake is about the only one I can think of similar to Newcastle Upon Tyne etc.. probably wrong but don't seem to notice them very often used in US/Canada.

Rugby is a tough and hard hitting game, for sure. It's a different kind of game though. It's more fluent and requires more stamina than American Football.

I used to play Rugby a lot. Never played actual American Football though you are right.

Watching NFL I see the main difference being you can hit whoever the hell you want, this alone probably makes it more brutal.
I wouldn't say the guys in the NFL are bigger than rugby players though.

Would be interesting to see a game of both mixed together.... NFL Rules with no protection and a mixture of people from both sports.

I know it is a tough sport, but what I said in that post about it, was the wearing protection looks kind of like a joke to most of us brits. Most people I know see it that way aswell.

Different rules and circumstances make them both tough sports.

You don't have the protection in Rugby, but you don't get hit as often or with as much speed.

American football you get hit more with more speed, more often, etc. But you are better protected.

The average career of an NFL player is 3.5 years. Every fourth game someone gets knocked the f out. The average life expectancy of an NFL player is 55, could be wrong about the exact figure, but it is in the early fifties. NFL is the most violent sport, they wear pads for a reason.

You are right! And it is one of them things / cultural difference. I think it is because the UK isn't as exposed to the NFL as it is to Rugby and that doesn't help at all. When I was growing up all I watched was football and rugby, played football and rugby and when I used to see highlights of NFL on the news it looked like a joke because there was only a small amount of action being shown.

If there was more of it shown on TV people might think otherwise, I know it has been getting more popular so maybe that will change. With the matches at Wembley etc. Might open more eyes up to what the sport is all about.
