My girlfriend works in senior financial services and she will also make killer money tax free there. I guess that more or less sealed the deal.

If you were moving to Mexico, it would be Senor Financial Services.

too small and surrounded by water

also, if you're a US citizen or have had a green card for more than 6 months you can't work anywhere in the world tax free, you have to keep filing with the IRS regardless and hand over income tax

There really are no guidelines set in stone for this, other than if you are in Canada for 6 months in a calendar year, you are automatically deemed resident for tax purposes. However, as long as you don't make millions when you are offshore and try to bring it back into Canada tax free at a later date, nobody is going to challenge you. Substantial ties with Canada should obviously be cut (health care coverage, bank accounts, property ownership etc...), but again no formal guidelines exist to regulate this. It is evaluated on a case by case basis. When you become non-resident for tax purposes of Canada, the intention (mentally) should be that you are never returning to Canada to live permanently again (which is why if you are bringing millions back they will generally challenge you on that). For this reason, I know a number of Canadian professionals who live offshore but still pay Canadian taxes as they do plan to return to live in Canada in the future. Obviously their advice came from their Canadian tax lawyers. So really, its not as simple as it seems, its not like you can just go away for a few years, make a few million tax free and bring it back into Canada and buy a house with the money and just carry on like you are back home from an extended vacation. It is worth noting that only two countries tax their citizens in their home country on their income no matter where they live, the US and Libya.

Unless it's been changed in the last few years, the first up to ~$80,000 is not taxed when you live out of the US depending on how many months of the year it is. You do still have to file a return though.

I'm not an expert in US tax law, but I think that only applies when a double taxation treaty exists.

- Bermuda has one of the highest GDPs per person in the World. Nearly twice that of Canada and the USA.
- There is no Income tax but high consumption taxes on everything brought in to the Island. That suits me much better than Income tax.
- The Bermudian dollar is pegged to the US Dollar, so no more US > CAD exchanges for me.
- The climate is Sub Tropical, so it's not blazing hot all the time.
- Bermuda has the highest level of broadband internet penetration in the World.
- You can never become a resident in Bermuda, no matter how long you stay. Only by marrying a Bermudian can you get citizenship, and even then it takes 10 years.
- Thus far there are no Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools in Bermuda. I intend to bring them Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu.

Just some of the pluses and minuses.

BuBye to the guns ....

Bermuda forbids all narcotics, weapons, ammunition, pornography and more
Huge penalties, prison and travel restrictions will result from ignoring this warning and importing them
---------------------
Bermuda law does not permit any person, except a bona fide member of an established gun club, to own a handgun.

In Bermuda, there is only one bona fide gun club ? The Coral Reefs Rifle & Pistol Club. All club members must undergo stringent checks by the Bermuda Police before they can even be accepted as potential gun-owners.
http://bernews.com/2010/04/a-look-at...ta-gun-charge/

But maybe your dogs are allowed ....

I understand the pluses of living there, but just curious (as a Canadian myself) - why do you not want to live in Canada? If I recall correctly, you've lived in Panama for a few years, right?

PS - sincere question, no BS

The island is really beautiful, cost of living is outrageous though, you should add that to the minuses

It isn't in the "this is expensive" category but in the "WTF!! is this Monte Carlo?" league.

A nice apartment in the city center is 10k up, bottle of water $5, loaf of bread $10, gas $2.5 a liter...all quickly adds up.

Heh heh, I live in Vancouver and it's already killer expensive here. But yeah I'm aware of the cost of living difference. My girlfriend has lived in Bermuda before. Thanks for the heads up though!
