Today is also the anniversary of the oil spill - Make BP Pay

I guess it is hitler's birthday, stoner day and now also the anniversary of the BP drilling disaster.

Tell me if I have this right;

BP set aside $20 billion USD for compensation (to locals, fishermen, etc)
BP to date has paid only $4 billion of that, mostly in the form of one-time buyout payments (that those who signed for them didn't at the time know what they were signing)
Ongoing compensation payouts to locals is too slow and dragging on while peoples' livelihoods suffer.
The BP lawyer who is handling the compensation payouts is himself being paid over $800K PER MONTH, and his salary just went up to $1.2 MILLION per month.

That about right?

Shit, I'm still waiting for New Orleans to get cleaned up post-Katrina. I'm betting you could still drive to the 9th ward and post pics of debris, can't you?

That about right?
And government agencies are getting fined for spending some of that "clean up money" on laptops and new SUVs.

That is about right...except that...unless I am mistaken...even though those that have accepted a payout still have the right to sue...and I don't think it is a BP lawyer that is in charge of the payouts. One of the reasons that payouts are not being made faster is because of fraudulent claims and frivolous claims. Hundreds of thousands of claims have come in from all fifty states and all of them have to be investigated. Thousands of fraudulent claims have been turned over to the AG and some will probably be prosecuted.

New Orleans East is STILL decimated and the few people living there have to drive way out of their hood just to get groceries. It is still messed up, yes.

Something like that!

BP is still cutting checks left and right. My family knows a bunch of people. There are waitresses getting like 7k checks who aren't even fucking out of work and affected by the spill. It is a crock of shit, they just want everyone to hear they are "doing the right thing."

Actually what they don't talk about in the media is all the PRISONERS right now STILL working cleanup for like $2 an hour. They're just using prison labor now, although they used it throughout the entire cleanup as well. Along with the "undocumented" hispanics that the Catholic church harbors down here under the guise of helping third world citizens.

Yeah, blah blah blah I know nobody cares. I wouldn't have even posted this has it not coincided with the other holidays. It's funny.

Funny but the governor is still sitting on millions of dollars that they gave him to build sand berms which didn't help so they stopped building them but he still has the money.

Do not think that for one minute hundreds of politicians didn't come out on top in this.

All that I said above was just reported in a tv news spot here, not 10 minutes before I saw this thread. They went quite in-depth with interviews of local fishermen in particular, people who actually have their livelihoods at stake.

They also made it a point to disclose the part about the BP lawyer who is handling the payouts. Showed his picture, showed a few brief clips of the guy, and included how much money he is being paid. So that's why I mentioned it.

I agree about the incredible mess of having to investigate validity of all the claims. I think the point of the news article (and this thread I would think) is that in amongst all of that mess there are still a lot of people down there who have legitimate claims who haven't had their claims approved, haven't been paid, or haven't been getting their ongoing payments quick enough.

And it was also stated that some who signed those one-time payout agreements are finding out now that those agreements included a claus which says they can't later sue BP for any further compensations. Which is kind of their own fault really, as people do need to read over anything like that carefully before signing. But I also realize there is a language barrier thing with a lot of folks in that area, so perhaps BP's people should have realized that and maybe done more to make sure those people knew in full what they were signing and agreeing to?

here's an article about what you posted, CD: http://www.nola.com/news/gulf-oil-sp..._80_perce.html

Did you know that Feinberg also settled payments to holocaust survivors, agent orange, 9/11 and the virginia tech shooting? This guy is super creepy.

Wow, you would think some people would be not so mad at BP because if not for BP they wouldn't have made huge checks last summer from the clean up efforts. Especially those people who lost nothing from the spill because they were not involved with the seafood, tourism, etc. industries but managed to leach on to a spot and cash in from the catastrophe.

He is not BP's lawyer...he was appointed by the government...and I should have been more specific about the right to sue. There are interim payouts and there are final payouts. Those that have not accepted final payouts but have received interim payments can still sue...if they are not satisfied with a final payout offer.

I saw him interviewed over the weekend and it is he that stated there has been claims come in from all fifty states in the Union and many have been found to be fraudulent and many have been found to be frivolous...but all claims have to be investigated...and is time consuming. He did also state that many of those that are submitting claims have not provided required documentation and until they do their claims cannot be processed.

He's a lawyer, and he works on behalf of BP to oversee the issue of claims. I guess I didn't see the need to go into who appointed him, he was mentioned in the news piece mostly to point out the imbalance of what he is paid per month as opposed to that of some of the locals who are still waiting after all these months for their rightful piece of the payout money while thier main source of income (fishing) has all but dried up.

The worst is the subtle PR campaign that BP is rolling out through all the nefarious "news" sources in the US... like the "Damage from Spill Not as Bad as We Thought" articles that show up on Yahoo etc.
Uggh.

My statement is that the money he is receiving CAME FROM BP. Nothing about who controls it. Ever hear the phrase, "Follow the money"...?

The fact of this matter is that this oil spill was beyond ANYTHING that BP could "fix," and there is so much money involved the governments (plural) really aren't going to punish shit, or make them stop doing anything, because they want their cuts. Obama included. They don't want BP to stop doing anything, or lose money and have any sort of trickle effect.

The profit this asshole lawyer is making is not coming from the USA, it is coming from BP. You think he is going to make a single move that would upset BP? HELL NO! His actions are to benefit BP, NOT the US government or anyone else. He is trying to get people to SIGN AWAY THEIR RIGHT TO SUE BP, nothing else.

Really, you are trying to argue about the stupidest shit now. A subject you know nothing about. I could get in my car RIGHT NOW and within 30 minutes be touching this fucking oil, it's still here. Your empty, general statements about the money are pointless. None of it matters, nothing can be done, it was a disaster and will never go away. All the money in the world will not fix it. It was too much oil to remove, period, so they "dispersed" it. Done deal.

I follow this news all the time, so let me add this. What this incident DID do, was give some other asshole politicians an excuse to say hey, look we fixed the problem that caused the blowout! So let's open MORE for deepwater drilling! We've LEARNED from out mistakes! Drill MORE! And guess what, that's what they are doing. Drilling more.

Lesson learned? I don't trust a single one of these fuckers. From this Feinberg guy, to Obama. There were dolphins swimming in the bayou, slowly dying. I have pictures! It is so sad. But the fact is most don't care, and will get in their SUV's, bitch about the price of gas, fill up, and go to a sports game this weekend and get drunk.

Life goes on.

I repeat...he does not work for BP...he works for the Federal Government...and pays out money controlled by the Federal Government...not BP...end of story.

Per your own logic, then Fletch worked for BP too all last summer. Because the money given to the contractors he worked for was money from BP. So BP paid Fletch's checks. That's money doesn't have blood on it, it has oil on it.

Doesn't matter if you go out to sports games or get high at home, most people don't care regardless of what they do for fun.

THIS.

I have heard and seen people getting $$ out of this that were in no way financially hurt by the disaster. Shrimpers and fishermen are losing everything and you've got waitstaff and bartenders making it rain cause they just got their $8k BP payoff. It's sick.
