Russian Math genius turns down $1million prize

Math genius Grigori Perelman, considered to be one of the world's most intelligent persons, turned down a one million dollar prize for solving what was thought to be an unsolvable problem. He says he is not interested in money, only knowledge

The Poincare conjecture was a seemingly unsolvable theorem that was first proposed in 1904. Dealing with a branch of spatial mathematics called topology, the theorem sought to prove that any shape without a hole can be formed into a sphere. Sounds simple enough, right? Tell that to the math world, which, for over a century, struggled to prove the elusive conjecture even possible, inadvertently turning it into one of the community's Holy Grails.

Is he interested in pussy? You can rent a lot of pussy for 1 mil. I like his principals but taking it in the name of a charity or university would have worked as well.

Not that smart obviously.

""Emptiness is everywhere and it can be calculated, which gives us a great opportunity. I know how to control the universe."

Slightly deluded also.

That money could be used to further things he would like to know and understand and if not that he could do away with it in Charity.

Money isnt number 1 for everyone. Those who think money is the most important thing dont really understand how anyone can think this.

To him having money is a distraction and a burden, even dealing with giving the money away would be a hassle. He got more important things floating around his head no doubt.

Its quite admirable.

why is that deluded? ok, perhaps the line about controlling the universe may seem a bit over the top but "emptiness is everywhere and it can be calculated" is quite true and discovering the physical laws of the universe most definitely helps us to control it.

It is by understanding those laws that we have satellites, gps and much of the technology we use every day.

I got recommended for a Clay prize a few months ago.

but my proofs are all DISPROOFS of major theories so there's no award since they were thought to be solved already!

I've learned how to calculate the voids; along with my colleagues we are getting to know the mechanisms for filling in the social and economic "voids". Voids are everywhere. They can be calculated, and this gives us great opportunities ... I know how to control the Universe. So tell me ? why should I chase a million?

Obviously he was trying to make some kind of point but there really is zero reason not to take the money. His lack of knowledge about the usefulness of money is pretty funny considering what a math genius he is. Then again when you are that good at math I'm sure he doesn't have any problems making money when he needs it. Still can't see why you wouldn't take the money and donate it to a charity at least.

It's no big deal. He's probably getting $20/hour to tutor people at Uni, could get a good salary as a maths lecturer.

The statement he is making will resonate for millions of years to come, securing his place in history as one of the greats!

On July 1, 2010, he turned down the prize saying that he believes his contribution in proving the Poincaré conjecture was no greater than that of U.S. mathematician Richard Hamilton (who first suggested a program for the solution).

As of the spring of 2003, Perelman, no longer worked at the Steklov Institute.[10] His friends are said to have stated that he currently finds mathematics a painful topic to discuss; some even say that he has abandoned mathematics entirely.[32] According to a 2006 interview, Perelman was then unemployed, living with his mother in Saint Petersburg.[10]

Calculating the velocity necessary for Yshua ben Nazareth to stay on the surface of a body of water is a lot less crazy than using it as a basis for a belief system. To him, our currency is monkey money, and the fact that it makes us dance around and do even more stupid things probably doesn't impress him.
