Websites that link to pirated music and movies to be blocked

Bad news for folks who frequent illegal file sharing and torrent sites to for their entertainment purposes. A recently proposed bill named the Protect IP Act (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property), the law will remove websites that dish out pirated content from the internet?s address books, making them hard to find by their domain name. The law would also force search engines to stop listing these infringing sites in their indexes.

The Protect IP Act would also allow copyright holders to apply for court orders to get sites blocked or de-listed. In addition to shutting down easy access to those websites, payment firms and ad networks could also be told to stop servicing such sites. Wow, it looks like the US government is really interested in quashing piracy in the country. However, this amount of censorship is not going to sit well with a lot of folks that who don?t believe that the government should be deciding what they can or can?t view online.

But no matter what the government does, people are going to find another way to access pirated content. People are always looking forward to get their hands on the ?forbidden fruit?. With recent reports suggesting that alternative services for movies like Netflix leading to the reduction of torrent downloads, maybe that?s the right step to take instead of blocking people from accessing it ? give them an alternative.

I can't see this passing. The censorship issues are huge.

As they should. It's taken them a long time to realize that digital content is part of the US economy.

Doesn't seem that far fetched, it's only 30 pages long, and is worded/directed towards sites that are "dedicated" to piracy. Then again just because it's reasonable doesn't mean it'll go anywhere I guess.

This isn't the first time this legislation came up by Leahy. There were some concerns about it last year, and the bill didn't come to the floor. It passed committee with flying colors.

One legislator vowed to block the bill in its then current form. One would assume the bill has been revised to overcome the objection, or at least provide a roadmap to negotiation.

the bill states that no site can link to pirate websites. seems totalitarian to me and against the nature and spirit of the internet.

They already regulate TV and radio. Don't think it won't happen to the internet sooner or later. The internet won't be a free-for-all forever.

where does anyone get censorship in this bill?

its about getting rid of PIRACY, preventing people from downloading PIRATED CONTENT.

Censorship is when you deny access to content based upon laws regarding obscenity, religion etc.

This has nothing to do with blocking legal content, this has everything to do with blocking illegally obtained and distributed content.

If by some miracle this does pass this could very well mean the end to all of the bullshit illegal tubes taking up the top 20 google searches...this is potentially great.

The internet is growing up. Adapt or die.

Creative people like artists, photographers and writers and programmers have been getting raped since the birth of the internet. The theft has not inspired the real potential of the internet but has rather corrupted it's purpose.

Money is clearly rewarding thieves of all sorts on the internet and I do hope something is done about it soon.
