Yea... converting footage over to Prores before I can edit it got old.
With Premier Pro, I can throw damn near anything on the timeline and it just rocks.

Bingo, same here, I will try out the new FCP, but the version they've had out is like something from 2001. Couldn't believe I had to keep rendering stuff, setup Qmaster (totally buggy) to use multi cores, even Vegas 10 was easier to use than FCP and could use any file.

I think premiere has the best product now, only thing I don't like it's a bit harder to automate stuff and batches from timelines. I'm not spending hundreds to test the new FCP for apple, I'll wait till a free copy lands in my lap or it gets rave reviews by people I know.

Same here, I used FCP in the past and they just didnt quite catch up to the times like Adobe did. I love both suites, but right now i'm strictly adobe.

How tough was the learning curve? I'm not to impressed with what I have seen coming from iMovie Pro (Final Cut X) and considering going to Premier.

so strange... I've been to so many Post houses and all the big guys use avid and fcp some are using smoke (espn) but ive never seen premier in a big post house.... (not saying it's not there just saying ive never seen it personally)

what are you guys having to convert? ive been on FCP years now and ran 1000's of hours through it for adult, mainstream, and everything in between and never rain into an issue that made me say.. well this sucks...

Thats because Post houses usually edit content for TV, Film, DVD etc. and FCP's settings are more geared towards that type of production. Its easier to get your colors broadcast safe, export to tape, etc etc.

The Premiere suite is more geared towards the prosumer who creates media for the web. Its a bit trickier to use it in a broadcast environment.

If you're seen the movie Avatar, then you've seen Premier in action.

I'm a die hard Premiere Pro guy and find it to be the best. I can import XDCam EX, HDV, AVCHD and other common formats and edit without rendering. I also like the integration in the CS5 suite with Photoshop and Adobe Encore for DVD authoring. A lot of the reason that post-production houses and large tv and film companies have tended to use Avid and FCP for many years now has a lot to do with the collaboration. In other words, Avid and to a lesser extent FCP was better set up so that multiple editors could pore through many hours of footage and collaboratively work on editing projects using a common shared database of footage usually stored on a centralized server.

Think of ESPN, MTV and companies that process a lot of footage every week and need to have multiple people working on them 24/7. The features that support that kind of collaboration is something Premiere Pro lacked in the past and maybe still does now. But for individual worksations I think Premiere Pro is very intuitive and easy to learn. Not to mention it works on less expensive pcs than FCP.

Looks badass? The folks I know who make their living using Final Cut are not at all happy.

The learning curve wasn't bad for me because I picked up a great tutorial from Lynda.com that had me up and running in no time. Here's a link!

Thanks Dean. Lynda.com member myself. I'll have to set aside some time to dig into that one.

Beyond lame. It's almost unthinkable, and yea, I've heard the same thing. Old FCp projects won't work in the new version, and supposedly it's nothing more an iMovie on some steroids.

WTF were they thinking??

I was Adobe Premiere from 6.5 to Pro 2.0, then went to Apple & FCP...now I'm having serious thoughts about going back.

The final straw for me was trying to edit some footage from my 5D Mark II in FCP. When I found out that these files can be dropped right on the Premier Pro timeline without first converting to something else, I downloaded a copy right away. Then I found out that you can drop just about anything on that timeline and it can handle it. I've edited 5D Mark II footage, footage from a couple of different small HD cams as well as video from my iPhone without having to first convert to Prores. PP is just a damn good program IMO
