If bill S.978 passes uploaders of copyrighted works could be jailed.

Just seen this over at reddit and thought of you guys when I read it.

From Opencongress.com:

Quote:
Makes unauthorized web streaming of copyrighted content a felony with a possible penalty of up to 5 years in prison. Illegal streaming of copyrighted content is defined in the bill as an offense that "consists of 10 or more public performances by electronic means, during any 180-day period, of 1 or more copyrighted works" and has a total economic value, either to the copyright holder or the infringer, of at least $2,500.
It looks like this is gonna pass. This bill has bipartisan support, and its goals were identified and proposed by the Obama admin. Plus the number of lobbyists for this thing is way more than against it. Like 50 high powered groups vs 3 not so much high powered.

I couldn't find any information regarding the DMCA act in a couple quick searches but maybe this is at least enough to make uploaders/illegal tube owners think twice before they upload someone else's work.

How the hell can the Electronic Frontier Foundation oppose this bill and still claim they support the industry?

That's just crazy!

Some of these tube sites use 90% of stolen content/illegal content. Unlike youtube which is more like 30% . Now, if the us gov wants wine and bitch about piracy and the piratebay so why not go after there christian evil and start trying to shut down these highly illegal tubes ?

And if the uploader is in a country where US law doesn't mean anything?

Or the site doesn't keep a record of the uploader?

I actually met with a law firm yesterday that wants to talk to program owners about going after porn uploaders in some major lawsuits.

the part you quoted implies this is about streaming the video not uploading it. this would put a quick end to many large tubes.

As it reads right now youtube would be guilty of those charges right now

I doubt how this will help anything porn industry due to tons of small content producers who dont have resources to track internet for their pirated content.

Paul, my question has always been, isn't there a way to control foreign sites in the US?

I mean...... there are only so many communication channels for this stuff to get to the US (primarily a few giant cables running across the ocean floors). The owners of those cables have servers/routers/controls that I'm guessing would allow them to filter foreign traffic???

Why can't/won't the US gov't just filter out such sites?

I'm sure my question is entirely too basic and simplistic, but it seems like a reasonable thought.

Like I said in an earlier post. I had a meeting yesterday with a lawfirm that is planning to file federal lawsuits against uploaders on behalf of porn program owners. This will help this to move that much faster.

Time to dust off some of my old TGP2 sites. Looks like they might become popular again.

because they care about free speach first

if this law made making a bogus takedown notice a felony too would you support it

fail to get a conviction because the upload was covered by fair use and the copyright holder goes to jail.

this is the coolest dance routine ever is valid commentary

and that statement means nothing if i don't SHOW you the video.
